ConnexT and Netscape combine efforts to introduce solutions for California and national energy deregulation.

ConnexT Corporation and Netscape Communications Corporation (NASDAQ: NSCP) today announced an agreement to incorporate Netscape client and server software into products specifically designed for the new competitive electric utility marketplace. By combining Netscape's expertise in Internet technology with ConnexT's in-depth knowledge of the energy supplier and customer market, ConnexT will be able to offer utility companies and their customers easy and rapid access to information such as metering, billing, risk management, profitability analysis, outage reports, energy pricing and management information, through a common interface. This will enhance the ability of businesses, consumers, utilities and energy suppliers to take advantage of the new options the opening of the approximately $300 billion energy marketplace can provide.

Netscape will provide Internet client and server software and ConnexT will provide the software applications. ConnexT will use various vendors' hardware for the actual meter device, printing and mailing, where required. This information technology infrastructure from ConnexT is being designed to meet the requirements for the January 1, 1998 energy deregulation in California.

Leveraging the trend toward advanced metering services, the new systems will provide full-service tools to manage, manipulate, and distribute utility data gathered through advanced metering as well as other data sources. Once in place, the technologies will serve as the "data backbone" for the information needs of energy consumers and suppliers, initially focusing on states such as California and those in the Northeast, where the rapid pace of energy deregulation has created an immediate need.

In addition, Internet-enabling of ConnexT's ConsumerLink(TM) Customer Information System (CIS) will allow energy consumers to quickly and easily access billing, power consumption and energy management information. It will also be one of the first systems worldwide to not just display but obtain, process and manage customer information using the Internet. It will include electronic commerce options for customers and eventually pre-payment capability.
