(NYSE NYSE See: New York Stock Exchange :CNR See riser card. CNR - Communication and Network Riser ) Monday added the Tape-Stor 1700 to its Tape-Stor family of tape backup systems packaged for retail sales. The new Conner drive is a floppy interface minicartridge (DC2000) tape drive that offers up to 1.7 gigabytes (GB) of storage capacity. It is compatible with the QIC-3020 and QIC-3010 standards and is read-compatible with QIC-80 and AccuTrak-250 tape formats. "The Tape-Stor 1700 provides low-cost backup for the millions of stand-alone and small network computer users requiring storage capacity in the 500 megabyte (MB) to 1.7GB range," said Robert Morris, vice president of tape marketing. "This is the highest capacity minicartridge available for use with the floppy-controller interface." The Tape-Stor 1700 joins an existing family of Conner floppy interface minicartridge products packaged for the retail market. These products feature tape drives -- with compressed storage capacities ranging from 250MB to more than 1.7GB -- that uniquely offer complete QIC (Quarter Inch Cartridge) A magnetic tape technology introduced in the early 1980s that has been widely used for backup. It was the first popular tape format for PCs. and AccuTrak compatibility. Conner also offers 4GB SCSI SCSI in full Small Computer System Interface Once common standard for connecting peripheral devices (disks, modems, printers, etc.) to small and medium-sized computers. SCSI has given way to faster standards, such as Firewire and USB. and IDE interface minicartridge tape backup systems to round out its Tape-Stor family. "This new tape drive further extends Conner's unique strategy to provide a cost-effective complement to our high-performance hard drives and software," said Morris. "Conner's objective is to provide computer users with a complete selection of storage solutions, including disk, tape and software products for a variety of applications." Higher Capacity The Tape-Stor 1700 drive offers up to 1.7GB of storage capacity with software data compression and QIC-Wide media. The native capacity of the drive is 850MB. See chart for media type and capacity. -0- Media (900 Oe, 400 ft.) Native Compressed (Typical) QIC-Wide 850MB 1.7GB Quarter inch 680MB 1.36GB Higher Performance The Tape-Stor 1700 writes data at a rate of up to 19MB per minute and is capable of supporting 2MBps data transfer rate floppy controllers. A proprietary Conner feature, FastSense(TM), allows the tape drive to sense automatically and then use the host system's fastest available data transfer rate. In addition, SoftSelect(TM) enables the minicartridge drive to be used in single or multiple floppy disk drive floppy disk drive - disk drive systems without requiring any additional components. The drive features an industry leading MTBF (Mean Time Between Failure) The average time a component works without failure. It is the number of failures divided by the hours under observation. MTBF - Mean Time Between Failures of greater than 100,000 hours and lower acoustic noise (less than 50 dBA) than tape drives offered by competitive manufacturers. Complete Solution Kit The Tape-Stor 1700 is a complete kit which includes Backup Exec software for DOS/Windows, the industry's leading data-protection software package. In addition, the solution kit features a high-performance 2MBps floppy interface controller card which allows the Tape-Stor 1700 to operate at its full potential. Mounting hardware required to install the drive in either 5.25-inch or 3.5-inch slots are included, as well as necessary cabling for easy installation. Both kits contain one free QIC-tape, offering up to 1.7GB capacity, a $25 value. Pricing and Availability The Tape-Stor 1700 will be available in March 1995 through Conner's authorized distributors and retail chains, such as Best Buy, CompUSA, Computer City, and Office Depot.
