It includes the controller and disk drives. See storage system.  for environments requiring both hardware and data fault tolerance See fault tolerant.

The nStor CR2 for RAID 5 is available immediately with list prices beginning at $10,502. Conner Storage Systems provides FAST/WIDE PCI (1) (Payment Card Industry) See PCI DSS.

(2) (Peripheral Component Interconnect) The most widely used I/O bus (peripheral bus).
SCSI-2 and EISA (Extended ISA) Pronounced "ee-suh." A PC bus standard that extends the 16-bit ISA bus (AT bus) to 32 bits and provides bus mastering. ISA cards can plug into an EISA slot.  FAST SCSI-2 RAID controller kits to support the RAID 5 implementations. The group sells products through a worldwide network of dealers, distributors and value-added resellers.

"Whether in a small workgroup or corporate enterprise network, one of the biggest concerns organizations face today is efficiently storing, protecting and managing mission-critical data," said Joel Appelbaum, senior vice president and general manager for Conner Storage Systems.

"The new nStor CR2 with RAID 5 is a solid addition to our RAID family of products, providing cost-effective storage, along with the non-stop data protection and high performance that mission critical applications require."

Conner's nStor CR2 is a modular dual bay disk subsystem that offers hot-swappable 4.2 GB disk drives and power supplies and cooling fans. The nStor CR2 transfers data at a rate of up to 20 megabytes per second (unit) megabytes per second - (MBps, MB/s) Millions of bytes per second. A unit of data rate. 1 MB/s = 1,000,000 bytes per second (not 1,048,576).  and the average seek time of its drives is 9.0 milliseconds. Conner also continues to offer the CR2 solutions which are available in 1 GB and 2 GB drive configurations.

The modular cabinet design of the nStor CR2 makes the subsystem an easily expandable storage solution that can be configured as either a RAID 5 implementation or a mirrored/duplexed system. RAID 5 is most frequently used in high-capacity, networked environments. With RAID 5 redundancy is added to a striped disk system without the expense of mirroring to provide a high level of fault tolerance.

This is achieved by distributing parity data across all drives in the array. Each parity block contains information that can be used to recreate the information in the other blocks of data within a single stripe.

The nStor subsystems can be daisy-chained together along with a PCI or EISA bus-based RAID controller to achieve a RAID 5 implementation with 12 GB of usable capacity. Up to three nStor CR2 systems can be "stacked" and attached to a single-channel RAID controller for a maximum of 20 GB of usable RAID 5 storage. With a dual-channel controller, two separate stacks of 3 systems can be configured for up to 40 GB of usable storage.

Conner's broad product family of disk arrays also includes the CR6 and CR12 subsystems which provide mid-range storage solutions (up to 48 GB using a dual channel RAID controller), fault tolerance and high performance. The products include smart cabinet electronics and RAID management software for centralized control and monitoring of RAID units.

All Conner RAID systems support EISA FAST SCSI-2 or FAST/WIDE PCI SCSI-2 controllers, making them ideal for video and imaging applications where fast performance is critical. All Conner RAID systems support a variety of operating systems, including Novell NetWare, Microsoft Windows NT Server, SCO UNIX, IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries)  OS/2 LAN Server, and IBM OS/2 Warp.

Continuing Conner Storage Systems' tradition of service and support, the Conner RAID product family is backed by trained customer support specialists and cross-shipment for product repairs under warranty. All Conner RAID systems offer a five-year warranty.

Founded in 1986, Conner sells, designs and builds a comprehensive line of information storage solutions products, including disk drives, tape drives, storage management software and disk array storage systems, for a wide range of computer applications. Conner had 1994 sales of $2.4 billion. -0- Note to Editors: All trademarks or registered trademarks are those of their respective owners.
