) Monday announced that seven additional companies have endorsed the SAF-TE SAF-TE SCSI Access Fault-Tolerant Enclosure  (SCSI SCSI
in full Small Computer System Interface

Once common standard for connecting peripheral devices (disks, modems, printers, etc.) to small and medium-sized computers. SCSI has given way to faster standards, such as Firewire and USB.
Accessed Fault Tolerant Enclosures) specification, testament to the importance of and growing support for standard storage management solutions.

The seven additional companies supporting the SAF-TE specification and indicating their intentions to build products compliant with the specification include leading computing and networking manufacturers Adaptec Inc., Advanced Telecommunications Modules Ltd. (ATML ATML Automatic Test Markup Language

), American Megatrends Inc. (AMI), AT&T Global Information Solutions, BusLogic Inc., Silicon Design Resources (SDR See software defined radio. ), and Symbios Logic Inc.

The SAF-TE specification, announced in October 1995, is designed to provide system OEMs with a comprehensive standardized method to monitor and report status information on the condition of disk drives, power supplies and cooling systems cooling systems

for housed animals include spraying of roofs with water, evaporative pads with fans, foggers and misters; for pastured animals shelter from the sun by trees or artificial shade devices and cooling ponds are used.
used in high availability LAN servers and storage subsystems. Conner and Intel are incorporating the SAF-TE specifications into their respective product lines and are working together to advance the specification in the industry.

"As RAID's use and significance continues to expand dramatically, customers look for ways to make RAID systems easier to administer and use," said Joel Appelbaum, senior vice president and general manager, Conner Storage Systems. "Not only do LAN administrators benefit from SAF-TE's notification features, but their companies benefit from the reduced costs associated with failed systems and custom integration."

Studies by Intel (Intel Corp., 1995) have shown that the power, cooling and disk components of a server are responsible for 86% of hardware-related server outages. Products compliant with the SAF-TE specification will reduce the cost of managing storage enclosures by providing a method for sending and receiving information about these hardware failures using standard SCSI interfaces.

Other SAF-TE supporters include leading server and controller manufacturers Mylex Corp., Siemens Nixdorf, Integraph Computer Systems, DPT (Distributed Processing Technology) and Tricord Systems Inc.

SAF-TE Specification Availability and Information

The SAF-TE specification is available now free of charge from Conner and Intel. The companies developed the SAF-TE specification based on Conner's RAID enclosure technology. A royalty-free reciprocal license is available for implementation of the specification. To secure a copy of the specification, developers may contact Conner Storage Systems by sending electronic mail to saf.te@conner.com.

Intel, the world's largest chip maker, is also a leading manufacturer of personal computer, networking and communications products.

Founded in 1986, Conner sells, designs and builds a comprehensive line of information storage solutions products, including disk drives, tape drives, storage management software and disk array storage systems, for a wide range of computer applications. Conner had 1994 sales of $2.4 billion. Conner's World Wide Web address is http://www.conner.com.

Conner Storage Systems manufacturers the nStor(tm) family of disk array products which provide up to 200 GB of high availability storage and support a variety of operating systems, including Novell NetWare, Microsoft NT Server, SCO UNIX, SCO (The SCO Group, Lindon, UT, www.sco.com) A leading vendor of Unix operating systems for the x86 platform. SCO had also offered Linux, but abandoned the line in the spring of 2003. The SCO Group is the combination of two companies: Utah-based Caldera, Inc.  Open Server, IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries)  OS/2 LAN Server, and IBM OS/2 Warp. The group sells products through a worldwide network of dealers, distributors and value-added resellers. -0-
