The net loss was $5.3 million, or $0.71 per share, in the third quarter of 1996 compared to a net loss of $2.4 million, or $0.54 per share, for the third quarter of 1995. The increase in net loss as anticipated was primarily due to a $2.4 million increase in research and development expenses in the third quarter of 1996 as the company funded advanced-stage clinical trials. For the nine months ended Sept. 30, 1996, the company's net loss was $12.5 million, or $1.91 per share, compared to a net loss of $7.7 million or $1.73 per share, reported for the same period last year. The quarter and nine months results were consistent with company expectations. As of Sept. 30, 1996, the company had $20.3 million in cash and short-term investments.
