Omega-3 fatty acids play a vital role in our overall health. They are excellent natural anti-inflammatory and help to prevent chronic diseases that occur due to inflammation.

In order to find out the connection between Omega 3 fatty acids and inflammation, it is essential to gain a clear understanding of how inflammation takes place and affects the functions of our body.

Inflammation is a part of body''s immune system response. However, chronic inflammation such as that occurring in osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis even though no illness or injury is present has not yet been fully understood by modern medical science.

Research on Omega 3 fatty acids and their role in preventing inflammation has revealed many interesting facts.

Inflammation can be treated by 2 options. One option is to use prescription based medications that suppress the immune system response. This can lead to other health problems and infection. The second option to control inflammation naturally is through the intake of omega 3 fatty acids.

These type of medications suppress the functioning of eicosanoids. Eicosanoids are molecules that play a vital role in the body systems. They indicate various important signals for the central nervous system and the immune system. They regulate the production of vital hormones vital to growth and sexual health.

Eicosanoids also play a key role in the health of blood vessels, platelets, heart health, inflammation and various other important functions in the body.

Connection between Omega 3 fatty acids and Inflammation

Research indicates that the eicosanoids derived from omega-6 fatty acids are inflammatory in nature, while those derived from omega-3 fats are anti-inflammatory.

Unfortunately the modern Western diet has become highly deficient in Omega 3 fatty acids. A diet that is overly rich in Omega 6 fats causes chronic inflammation and its associated health problems.

Medical experts recommend the use of fish oil and fish as an active source of omega-3 in our diet. Omega-3 fats help to prevent cartilage degeneration in arthritis patients. They also allow greater flexibility, reduced pain, lower incidence of morning stiffness and higher energy levels.

Very few food sources are rich enough in their omega-3 content. Most of them contain much higher levels of Omega 6. Fish is among the food sources that contains good amount of Omega 3s.

The recommended daily intake of Omega 3s is around 1 g or 1000 mg per day. Consuming fish daily on a regular basis is a good means for omega-3 supplementation, but it also contains the risk of mercury contamination.

It is much better to take purified fish oil supplements that have undergone the process of molecular distillation. This process makes the fish oil safe enough for consumption and frees it from the risk of contamination.

Fish oil that contains vitamin A such as cod liver oil should be avoided as excessive intake of vitamin A can be toxic.
