Conklin lifts No. 1 North over Churchill.

Brian Conklin did it all by himself in the first half.

He shared the ball - and the spotlight - in the second half for top-ranked North Eugene.

Conklin scored 12 of his game-high 18 points in the first half, then found open teammates late to lift the Highlanders to a 52-42 victory over No. 5 Churchill in their Midwestern League boys basketball opener before a rowdy gathering at Churchill on Thursday night.

"This is definitely big. It's good to get this one out of the way," said Conklin, a 6-foot-8 junior wing.

North Eugene (10-0, 1-0 league) won at Churchill for the first time in 11 years without senior wing Andrew Hookland, who has a small fracture in his left wrist. He will likely miss at least two weeks, coach Bill Wagner said.

Sophomore Joe Kammerer, a 6-9 post, filled in and had eight points and five rebounds for the Highlanders.

"He played a tremendous game," Wagner said.

North point guard Markus Baker added 11 points and six assists, and A.J. Vanderhoff had 10 points, including three three-pointers in the third quarter.

Blake Harrison had 15 points to lead Churchill (7-3, 0-1).

As usual, Conklin led the way, using a variety of moves inside to help North to a 20-16 halftime advantage.

"I've been coming out weak the last couple games," Conklin said. "Hookland told me I need to step up and get going, so I did just that and got it started."

He helped everyone else get going in the second half.

Vanderhoff opened the period with a three-pointer, and after Churchill cut the deficit to 23-22, he sank another three.

Vanderhoff then capped a 13-2 run with his third three of the quarter, giving the Highlanders a 35-24 lead.

for a three-pointer to open the fourth quarter, and after Conklin scored back-to-back buckets, he found Baker for an open three to push the lead to 45-29.

"When I get going like that in the first half, it opens it up for the guys outside," Conklin said. "They're doing a great job knocking those shots down. Everyone was stepping up."

Conklin also had the defensive assignment on Churchill senior Andrew Schumacher, a first-team all-league forward last season. Schumacher finished with seven points.

"That's what people like to watch - two great players going after each other."

in the final minute to seal it for North, which should retain its statewide No. 1 ranking for another week.

"Obviously we know being picked No. 1, people are going to try knock us off," Wagner said. "But we don't worry about about the stigma stigma: see pistil.
