Conita Technologies Selects Fonix Text-To-Speech for Award-Winning PVAServer; Robust, Natural-Sounding TTS to Enhance Mobile Professional Software Solution.

Business Editors/High-Tech Writers

SALT LAKE CITY--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 18, 2001

Fonix Corp. (OTCBB: FONX), a leading provider of human-user interface technology solutions for wireless and mobile devices, Internet and telephony systems, and vehicle telematics, Thursday announced that Conita Technologies Inc. has selected Fonix FAAST Text-To-Speech (TTS) for use in its PVA software, the PVAServer(TM).

Driven by the need for mobile professionals to interact with corporate and public information sources, the Conita(TM) PVA system provides these professionals with instant awareness, knowledge, and transactions by enabling anytime, anywhere voice access to corporate networks and the Internet from a single access point -- the telephone.

With the integration of Fonix FAAST TTS, nearly 70 million high value mobile and remote professional workers can use Conita's PVAServer(TM) to access data that resides on a corporate network from any location and interact with it, using simple conversational language.

The PVAServer provides the user with his or her own personal virtual assistant and uses the individual's voice to access and update corporate databases and the Internet. By using the PVA, the user is able to stay in touch with work at the office by managing and obtaining phone messages, email, calendars, contacts, tasks, and conference calls.

Enabled by the Fonix FAAST Text-To-Speech (TTS) Engine and Conita's Conversant Engine, the PVAServer incorporates a conversational interface without the need for restrictive vocabularies or time-consuming menu choices. One of the key features of the PVAServer is that it invokes a highly intelligent voice-user interface that adapts to a specific user's context and usage patterns.

"To be successful, it is imperative that our PVA incorporate the best-of-breed TTS on the market today," said Lawrence E. Vertal, vice president of marketing for Conita. "After an exhaustive review, we selected Fonix TTS as the clear choice to meet that standard for our customers."

"Conita has done a marvelous job of creating a system that merges the Internet, computers, and telephony for maximum mobile professional productivity," said William A. Maasberg, Fonix COO. "Our high-quality TTS solution was designed specifically to meet the complex demands of such systems, and we are pleased to have been selected."

Conita Technologies Inc. joins an extensive list of companies and organizations worldwide that are using Fonix TTS solutions to drive their voice applications. Fonix FAAST offers industry-leading multi-channel TTS process capability for highly scalable, cost-effective server implementations. When utilizing the Fonix FAAST framework, Fonix TTS supports 250 channels on one server platform.

Fonix FAAST TTS offers both Unlimited Vocabulary TTS and Customized Vocabulary TTS Engines. For delivery to a global market, Fonix FAAST TTS provides multiple language support. TTS soundbanks are currently available as beta-level plug-ins for UK English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Danish, Swedish, Finnish, and Norwegian.

Fonix FAAST TTS provides both female and male voices, markup language support, prioritized soundbank selection, and the ability to alter pitch, speed, and volume. FAAST TTS is currently available on Microsoft Windows 95/98, NT, ME, and Windows 2000 operating systems and will be available in the first quarter of 2001 on several Unix(R) platforms, including Linux and Solaris.

Fonix FAAST showcases a feature-rich TTS Development API set that allows consumers to integrate text-to-speech into their applications. The FAAST API set includes C++, Java, and ActiveX, and is SAPI 4.0-compliant.

The PVAServer is currently shipping. For further information, visit www.conita.com or call Conita at 803/733-2555.
