Congress makes move to expand FMLA.In recent weeks, five bills have been introduced in the 111th Congress that would expand the Family Medical Leave Act, a federal law that requires business owners with more than 50 employees to provide 12 weeks of unpaid leave for the birth or adoption of a child and to care for their own serious illness or a family members' serious illness. The Family Leave Insurance Act (H.R. 1723) would provide up to 12 weeks of paid leave for birth, adoption or foster care placement, to care for a (grand)child, (grand)parent, spouse spouse A legal marriage partner as defined by state law , domestic partner or siblings siblings npl (formal) → frères et sœurs mpl (de mêmes parents) with a serious health condition, for the employee's health condition, or because of any exigency arising from a family member's call to active duty or to care for an injured in·jure tr.v. in·jured, in·jur·ing, in·jures 1. To cause damage to; impair. 3. service member The Family Fairness Act (H.R. 398) would eliminate the hours of service requirement under the FMLA FMLA Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 FMLA Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance , allowing part-time employees to take advantage of FMLA leave benefits The Family-Friendly Workplace Act (H.R. 933) would allow private sector employees to elect paid time off as compensation for working overtime hours The Family and Medical Leave Enhancement Act (H.R. 824) would expand access to FMLA by covering all employers with 25 or more employees. It allows up to four hours of parental leave parental leave n. A leave of absence granted to a parent to care for a new baby. during any 30-day period. The legislation also clarifies the FMLA, stating that leave may be taken for routine family medical needs and to assist elderly relatives The Working Families Flexibility Act (H.R. 1274) would allow an employee to request from their employer a change in terms or conditions of employment conditions of employment that part of an employment that sets out the duties, responsibilities, hours of work, salary, leave and other privileges to be enjoyed by persons employed, for example a veterinary nurse, in private practice. if the request relates to the number of hours, the times, or where the employee is required to work. This bill would cover employers with 15 or more employees. A sixth bill, the Healthy Families Act, which would require businesses with more than 25 employees to provide seven days of paid sick leave to their workers, also may be introduced this spring.
