Congress Restores Aid for Small Manufacturers in Oregon, OMEP Announces.

PORTLAND, Ore.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 19, 2003

The U.S. Congress has voted to support America's small manufacturers by restoring funds for an effective public-private program that stimulates the economy and bolsters our production base to compete globally with low wage countries.

The Omnibus Appropriation legislation passed by Congress last Friday includes at least $105.9 million dollars for the NIST (National Institute of Standards & Technology, Washington, DC, www.nist.gov) The standards-defining agency of the U.S. government, formerly the National Bureau of Standards. OMEP has worked directly with 500 small and mid-sized Oregon manufacturers to help them adopt new technologies and modern business practices, grow their companies and provide family wage jobs for Oregon workers. With 98 percent of Oregon's 7,000 manufacturers considered to be small businesses, many more companies could benefit from OMEP's services.
