In Illinois, these districts are called unit school districts.  Superintendent Gail Anderson Ulikema is the 2002 National Superintendent of the Year. Uilkema accepted the award at AASA's Annual Conference & Exposition in San Diego San Diego (săn dēā`gō), city (1990 pop. 1,110,549), seat of San Diego co., S Calif., on San Diego Bay; inc. 1850. San Diego includes the unincorporated communities of La Jolla and Spring Valley. Coronado is across the bay.  on Feb. 15.

Uilkema, who has been superintendent of the 2,600-student district since 1987, was one of four national finalists competing for the top administrator award. The other three national finalists were: Lorraine Costella, superintendent of the 2,900-student Kent County Public Schools in Chestertown, Md.; R. With 132,000 students enrolled, it is the second-largest school district in North Carolina and the twentieth-largest in the nation.  in Charlotte, N.C.
