Conference will point way; InsideView.Byline: Roger McKenzie THE West Midlands West Midlands, former metropolitan county, central England. Created in the 1974 local government reorganization, the county embraced the Birmingham conurbation and comprised seven metropolitan districts: Walsall, Wolverhampton, Dudley, Sandwell, Birmingham, Solihull, Regional Observatory, of which I am honoured to be vice-chair, has continued to play a leading role in engaging the region's leaders and decision-makers in a debate about the economic recovery of our region. They recently launched an important book entitled 'West Midlands: Fit for the Future?' which can be downloaded from the Observatory website on www.wmro.org. 'Fit for the Future?' reflects a range of views on how the region can be ready for the economic upturn. This book is part of an ongoing debate with a range of partners designed to help the region's policy-makers. It is no secret that the West Midlands has been hardest-hit of any English region by the recession. The choice facing decision-makers in the region is whether to adopt knee-jerk solutions or whether to be innovative and fresh in our approach. I think this applies to the decisions that are being taken right now about the role of public services Public services is a term usually used to mean services provided by government to its citizens, either directly (through the public sector) or by financing private provision of services. . Unions will be at the heart of that debate. These themes will be picked up at the Observatory's annual conference on October 20. This is an important and timely conference to help us be more proactive at a critical time for our region.
