PIANO CONCERT

Tuesday, April 5 * 8:00 P.M. Angela Cheng

Hailed by critics for her remarkable technique, tonal beauty and musicianship, Angela Cheng has appeared as soloist with nearly every orchestra in Canada, as well as the Israel Philharmonic, Buffalo Philharmonic and the symphonies of Colorado, Syracuse, St. Louis, Indianapolis, New Orleans, Houston and Utah.

Cheng has won numerous prizes including the 1986 Gold Medal at the Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Masters Competition and the prestigious Montreal International Piano Competition (1988). For her outstanding interpretations of Mozart, she received the Medal of Excellence at the Mozarteum in Salzburg in 1991.

Cheng received a bachelor of music degree from The Juilliard School and a master of music degree from Indiana University.

Adriana Zabala's career spans a wide range of musical interests including song repertoire, new works, concert and oratorio oratorio (ôrətôr`ēō), musical composition employing chorus, orchestra, and soloists and usually, but not necessarily, a setting of a sacred libretto without stage action or scenery. , cabaret and Latin jazz. She also is serving as program manager and co-artistic director of the Southeastern Festival of Song.

Zabala received her undergraduate degree from Louisiana State University Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College, generally known as Louisiana State University or LSU, is a public, coeducational university located in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and the main campus of the Louisiana State University System.  in 1994 and spent the following school year as a Fulbright Scholar, in Salzburg, Austria. Upon returning to the United States, she pursued a master's degree at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music Its origins come from two sources: the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, formed in 1867 as part of a girls' finishing school, and the College of Music of Cincinnati, which opened in 1878. .

During the last few seasons, Zabala has played such roles as Kate Pinkerton with the Seattle Opera, Meg in Little Women with the Minnesota Opera; and Hermia, Cherubino, Amastre and Emma Jones with the Wolf Trap Opera.

AMERICAN PIANISTS ASSOCIATION FELLOWS CONCERT

Sunday, April 3 * 8:00 P.M. Thomas Rosenkranz

Thomas Rosenkranz is a pianist possessing extreme versatility ranging from classical music to experimental improvisation. Rosenkranz began his studies at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music The Oberlin Conservatory of Music, located in Oberlin, Ohio, was founded in 1865 and is the oldest continuously operating conservatory in the United States. . He is doctoral candidate at Eastman, continuing his studies with Nelita True, and is artist affiliate at Syracuse University, where he teaches piano. Rosenkranz was winner of the 1999 MTNA MTNA Music Teachers National Association

Michael Sheppard

Michael Sheppard holds a master's degree from the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University Johns Hopkins University, mainly at Baltimore, Md. Johns Hopkins in 1867 had a group of his associates incorporated as the trustees of a university and a hospital, endowing each with $3.5 million. Daniel C. . He studies with Leon Fleisher. Sheppard has performed in master classes for such renowned artists and pedagogues as Eugene Istomin, Seymour Bernstein, Victor Rosenbaum, Garrick Ohlsson, Murray Perahia, Stephen Hough, Ann Schein, Kemal Gekic and Daniel Barenboi Sheppard has appeared in solo recitals and chamber music performances throughout the United States, as well as in France and Italy.

Adam Birnbaum

Adam Birnbaum is an honors graduate of Boston College, and in 2003 received an artist's diploma as a member of the inaugural class at the Juilliard Institute for Jazz Studies. He has studied classical piano with John Adams and Patricia Zander and jazz with several teachers, including Danilo Perez, Charlie Banacos and Fred Hersch. Saturday, April 2 * 7:00 P.M. Barry Bittman, keynote speaker

Barry Bittman, M.D., neurologist, author and international speaker, will deliver the keynote address, focusing on Recreational Music Making, during the conference opening session.

Based on his conviction that Recreational Music Making is an effective therapeutic strategy in conventional medical care, Bittman led a team of researchers who investigated the biological effects of the HealthRHYTHMS group drumming protocol he co-developed.
