 interoperability platform.

AutoBaud technology is designed to significantly enhance the connection set-up process between SDSL equipment operating at any one of the dozens of line rates that SDSL technology supports by avoiding time-consuming manual line qualification. AutoBaud will allow carriers to automatically qualify and determine the maximum data rate supported by the line, alleviating the need for a truck roll.

The technology is being implemented as an embedded software algorithm within the device driver for Conexant's ZipWire SDSL chip, which Lucent is the first to incorporate into its recently announced Stinger DSL access multiplexer (DSLAM (DSL Access Multiplexor) A central office (CO) device for ADSL service that intermixes voice traffic and DSL traffic onto a customer's DSL line. It also separates incoming phone and data signals and directs them onto the appropriate carrier's network. See DSL. ). The ZipWire chip enables Lucent's Stinger DSLAM to operate at software-selectable data rates from 144 Kbps to 2320 Kbps, while dynamically allocating voice and data bandwidth as a low-cost T1 alternative.

Lucent has completed a first round of interoperability testing for AutoBaud technology using Lucent's Stinger DSLAM and Flowpoint's 2200/24 SDSL router. Following completion of interoperability tests, Lucent will endorse Conexant's submission of AutoBaud as the foundation of an industry-wide SDSL interoperability initiative. The initial group of carriers and manufacturers that support AutoBaud technology as the basis for a common interoperability platform for SDSL equipment includes: Covad Communications (NASDAQ:COVD COVD College of Optometrists in Vision Development

, DSL product manager, InterNetworking Systems, Lucent Technologies. "AutoBaud technology takes one of the greatest advantages of SDSL technology -- the ability to support multiple software-selectable data rates -- and makes it significantly easier for carriers to deliver. We are excited to be working with Conexant on this important technology."

"Conexant will be working closely with Lucent and other leading carriers and equipment manufacturers to extend AutoBaud technology so that it ensures a very high level of compatibility for today's SDSL networking equipment," said Raouf Halim, senior vice president and general manager for Conexant's Network Access Division. "We will be making the AutoBaud algorithm available to equipment manufacturers upon request, and will be including it in every member of our market-leading ZipWire family. We also plan to offer a seamless migration path from these current ZipWire products to next-generation products that support the forthcoming ITU-based G.shdsl standard, while maintaining backwards compatibility with our current ZipWire products and this first-generation SDSL interoperability platform."
