Conexant Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:CNXT) Monday announced the availability of a complete reference design that will bring together voice, video and data services in broadband access gateway products for corporate telecommuters, small businesses, home offices and residential end-users in the European cable market.

These products will support a host of applications from electronic commerce, online trading Online Trading

), and Com21 (Nasdaq:CMTO CMTO College of Massage Therapists of Ontario ) also has adopted a version of this platform for its next-generation broadband access products.

The platform is based on Conexant's CN9414 programmable single-chip cable modem, the world's only solution capable of supporting all current and future global open standards Specifications for hardware and software that are developed by a standards organization or a consortium involved in supporting a standard. Available to the public for developing compliant products, open standards imply "open systems;" that an existing component in a system can be replaced  for cable modems.

This was also the first cable-modem chip to achieve verification from the digital video broadcast (DVB (Digital Video Broadcasting) An international digital television (DTV) standard that is the European and Far Eastern counterpart of the North American ATSC standard. )/Digital Audio Video Council (DAVIC DAVIC Digital Audio-Visual Council

) Interoperability Consortium, in a product implementation that was developed by cable-modem system manufacturer, The industree BV. This verification will ensure compliance with the DVB standard as widespread product deployment begins throughout Europe.

The industree's CableFleet(R) implementation leverages the CN9414's versatile software-centric architecture to deliver end-to-end voice services, five simultaneous channels of TV-quality video, and fast Internet access See how to access the Internet.  over hybrid fiber coaxial (HFC 1. ) networks.

"With this reference design, manufacturers serving Europe and other global DVB/EuroModem markets now have the world's most comprehensive and versatile broadband access design platform -- a platform that has also been endorsed by some of Europe's most prominent manufacturers," said Dan Marotta, vice president and general manager for Conexant's Digital Infotainment Division.

"No other solution offers the same combination of completeness, performance, low cost and flexibility, along with the ability to support new worldwide open standards and feature sets like I7P telephony and home networking, all via simple network downloads."

Cable modems are up to 1,000 times faster than today's fastest dial-up modems, and combine a complex set of functions including signal modulation/demodulation, bridging and routing, a network interface, a simple network management protocol (SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) A widely used network monitoring and control protocol. Data are passed from SNMP agents, which are hardware and/or software processes reporting activity in each network device (hub, router, bridge, etc. ) agent, and an Ethernet hub.

Conexant's CX9430CM reference design simplifies and speeds product development by providing all of the integrated hardware and software for this functionality, in full support of DVB and EuroModem industry standards.

It is the most complete reference design available, and will simplify the development of products that interoperate with cable network infrastructure equipment in Europe, China, Latin America and other worldwide markets.

Additionally, the CN9414's unique, programmable architecture, coupled with its embedded advanced RISC machine (processor) Advanced RISC Machine - (ARM, Originally Acorn RISC Machine). A series of low-cost, power-efficient 32-bit RISC microprocessors for embedded control, computing, digital signal processing, games, consumer multimedia and portable applications.  (ARM) processors, provides manufacturers with the unprecedented flexibility to quickly adapt their designs for use in a variety of emerging Internet Protocol (IP), telephony and video product designs.

In April, Com21 announced that it selected Conexant's CN9414 single-chip cable modem to develop next-generation products supporting the DVB and EuroModem industry standards.

Com21 is basing these products on an enhanced version of Conexant's DVB/EuroModem cable-modem reference design, which Com21 will use to create products with enhanced functionality and performance for the DVB, DAVIC and EuroModem market segments.

Conexant's complete reference design includes a comprehensive suite of drivers, application software and operating system codes, as well as EuroModem Class A application-layer software above the transmission control protocol (TCP (1) (Transmission Control Protocol) The reliable transport protocol within the TCP/IP protocol suite. TCP ensures that all data arrive accurately and 100% intact at the other end. )/IP stack for such critical cable-modem functions as registration, authentication and software downloading.

CX9430CM software is also upgradable to EuroModem Class B standards via a network download. In addition reference design includes all application program interface (API) documentation, plus schematics and Gerber files.

Together, the single-chip cable modem and comprehensive reference-design software suite create a complete system solution that is up to 25 percent less costly and more power-efficient than alternative digital cable-modem solutions.

Conexant's unique programmable cable-modem architecture also improves system performance as compared with full-hardware solutions, since its software-based media access control (MAC) layer enables cable-modem functionality to be distributed more efficiently among a number of processing resources.

DVB and DAVIC are international standards for interactive video, audio, data and voice services, and they provide the foundation for the more extensive EuroModem specification established by the EuroModem Consortium consisting of members of the European Cable Communications Association (ECCA ECCA European Cable Communication Association
ECCA East Caribbean Currency Authority
ECCA English Community Association (UK)
ECCA Electromagnetically Coupled Curl Antenna

).

Conexant's CX9430CM reference design will be available in July 2000 to customers wishing to manufacture DVB/DAVIC EuroModem Class A products in volume.
