Conexant Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:CNXT) Monday announced the opening of its newest design center, located in Vancouver, Canada.

The 20,000-square-foot facility will be used to expand Conexant's OptiPHY and broadband access multiplexer (BAM Bam (bäm), town (1996 pop. 70,100), Kerman prov., SE Iran, on the intermittent Bam River. These products are used by high-speed optical network equipment manufacturers to combine low-speed circuits into higher speed circuits so that significantly higher volumes of traffic can be processed by equipment using the SONET/SDH optical network transmission standards.

The facilities will be occupied by engineers and technicians with expertise in very-large-scale integration (VLSI VLSI: see integrated circuit.

"Conexant's SONET/SDH design team, in cooperation with our existing capabilities, teams and recent acquisitions, will further expand our position as a leading supplier of one of the industry's most comprehensive family of fiber-optic networking devices," said Raouf Halim, senior vice president and general manager of Conexant's Network Access Division.

"The Vancouver area has become a center of excellence for communications semiconductor design activity, and establishing an operation here will allow us to offer engineers in the area an opportunity to join a winning team."
