Conexant Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:CNXT), a worldwide leader in semiconductor solutions for communications applications, today announced that its global system for mobile communications/general packet radio system (GSM/GPRS) has been selected by Samsung for use in several new handset designs.

Beguwala noted that Samsung also has incorporated Conexant's GSM solution in multiple GSM handsets. Available today, the handsets offered include form factors ranging from small folder type to slightly larger flip phones, with rich features such as a WAP browser, predictive text input, Chinese character input, IrDA interface, calendar, "To do" list, multiple games and an integrated MP3 player.

The hardware portion of Conexant's solution implements all digital and analog baseband processing, multiband/multi-slot power amplification, power management, battery charging and transceiver functions. The system uses an industry leading, low-power, direct-conversion architecture transceiver, which eliminates the intermediate-frequency conversion steps of earlier mobile handset solutions.

Conexant's protocol stack and MMI API have been field tested in more than 20 countries worldwide, qualified and approved by more than 50 GSM network providers across Europe and Asia.
