Concurrent Computer ships 200 megahertz MAXION multiprocessor system ahead of schedule.


OCEANPORT, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 13, 1995--Concurrent Computer Corp. Monday announced that it has shipped the first 200 megahertz One million cycles per second. See MHz.

MegaHertz - (MHz) Millions of cycles per second. The unit of frequency used to measure the clock rate of modern digital logic, including microprocessors.
 (MHz (MegaHertZ) One million cycles per second. It is used to measure the transmission speed of electronic devices, including channels, buses and the computer's internal clock. A one-megahertz clock (1 MHz) means some number of bits (16, 32, 64, etc. ) version of its industry leading MAXION(TM) multiprocessor system.

Announced to the industry only in December 1994, the first production 200 MHz MAXION system was shipped in late January, more than a month ahead of schedule. It is scheduled for installation at the Beijing Institute of Electronic System Engineering (BIESE), a major government-funded research institute for wind tunnel wind tunnel, apparatus for studying the interaction between a solid body and an airstream. A wind tunnel simulates the conditions of an aircraft in flight by causing a high-speed stream of air to flow past a model of the aircraft (or part of an aircraft) being tested.  testing in the People's Republic of China. Concurrent said that there was strong interest in the 200 MHz model from current MAXION system customers using the original 150 MHz-based models. Customers who have already ordered upgrades to the 200 MHz models are Westinghouse Electronic Systems Group, Hughes Missile Systems, and the Shaanxi Dynamic Machine Design Institute (SDMDI) in Beijing.

With this microprocessor upgrade, the MAXION system's raw computational performance is increased by 33 percent over prior systems based on the 150 MHz RISC processor. The R4400-200-based MAXION system ranges in price from $27,495 to $121,000 US list price for base system configurations. Later this year, Concurrent will introduce an eight-processor, R4400-200-based system.
