(Nasdaq:CCUR CCUR Center for Crops Utilization Research ) today introduced its new MediaHawk(TM) Model 2000 Video-On-Demand (VOD) Server, offering broadband operators the most reliable and efficient video server available today.

Capitalizing on its over 30 years of experience developing efficient, high-performing, reliable technology solutions for mission-critical applications for the aerospace and defense industries, Concurrent Computer Corporation once again has developed a solution that enables the broadband industry to have the most efficient and reliable solution available. For the VOD market, Concurrent has developed the preeminent MediaHawk Model 2000 Video Server, which outperforms competing video servers by offering industry-leading flexibility, scalability, and functionality.

First shipped in early October, the new MediaHawk Model 2000 Video Server and software are designed to support multiple digital set-top boxes, including Scientific-Atlanta, Motorola, Sony, Pioneer, and Pace set-top box platforms.

The new MediaHawk is designed to operate optimally in both a distributed network architecture, minimizing network transport infrastructure requirements and system costs, and a centralized network architecture, minimizing physical space requirements and incremental facility costs. With this flexibility, Concurrent's MediaHawk Model 2000 can support VOD in the largest broadband systems, featuring an architecture that supports as many interconnected servers as needed as needed prn. See prn order. . The system is also modular and therefore easily scalable. Customers can scale both video storage and stream capacity in various increments, allowing for significant flexibility and efficiency.

Bob Chism, Vice President of Development, Concurrent Computer Corporation, commented, "The MediaHawk Model 2000 VOD system is proven today - already having shipped to multiple customers. This new MediaHawk system will be used to launch some of the industry's largest and most visible deployments later this year and in 2001. We pride ourselves in the fact that this new technology is viewed as the most efficient and reliable video server solution available today."

Additional System Features

The MediaHawk Model 2000 offers other benefits over competing video server technology on the market today, which include:

Smaller Size

in a small 19" wide and 17 1/2" high chassis, taking up less space than other video servers. This compact size permits customers to save valuable rack space in system operators' head-ends, network operations centers, and hubs. For further convenience, the disks are positioned in the front of the server for easy access and upgrades. Upgrades supporting next generation disk technology are easily accomplished without the need for changing out the server.

Greater Programming Storage in a Single Rack

Despite its small size, the MediaHawk Model 2000 stores a large amount of programming - more than 1,200 feature-length films in a single rack, using RAID5 technology. A single rack is capable of streaming 1,792 streams. The MediaHawk Model 2000 can deliver over 200 megabits per second (unit) megabits per second - (Mbps, Mb/s) Millions of bits per second. A unit of data rate. 1 Mb/s = 1,000,000 bits per second (not 1,048,576).

E.g. Ethernet can carry 10 Mbps.

Better Reliability and Efficiency

An embedded kernel in the MediaHawk Model 2000 Video Server means greater reliability and efficiency. An embedded kernel significantly increases system performance, and therefore decreases system costs. The majority of video servers rely upon traditional operating system operating system (OS)

technologies, which increase burdensome overhead, reduce reliability, and increase costs.

Integrated high-density Quadrature quadrature, in astronomy, arrangement of two celestial bodies at right angles to each other as viewed from a reference point. If the reference point is the earth and the sun is one of the bodies, a planet is in quadrature when its elongation is 90°.  Amplitude Modulators (QAMs) and RF up-converters are supported. Integrated QAMs and RF up-converters lower costs and reduce physical footprint requirements for the broadband system operator.

Universal Power and Dual Input Power

Fully redundant power supplies, with universal power modules, are embedded into the MediaHawk Model 2000. If primary input power is lost to the server, a secondary power input is available to ensure continuous service. Multiple power inputs are supporting including 115vac through 230vac and -48vdc).

The MediaHawk Model 2000 also features rotational sensing cooling fans coupled with heat monitoring sensors. If the ambient operating temperature increases, the cooling fan speed increases automatically to keep the server cool and ensure continuous service.
