Concerts heat up the Northwest.Byline: Lewis Taylor The Register-Guard If you're dissatisfied with the limited local concert offerings, all it takes is a little - OK a lot - of gas money and an adventurous spirit. The list of summer music venues in the Pacific Northwest continues to grow faster than a Doug fir in April. And that means you'll have plenty to choose from between casino, historic theater, vineyard, mountain retreat and waterfront amphitheater. We've selected a few of the highlights from these various stages. Les Schwab Amphitheater, Bend One of the area's newer summer venues comes to life with a wide-ranging selection of shows. Now in its third year of operation, the 9,000-capacity lawn by the Deschutes River hosts Jewel on June 21 and welcomes Keith Urban on July 23. Laurie Lewis plays on Aug. 23, the Pixies pixies prank-playing fairies; mislead travelers. [Br. (www .lsabend.com) Waterfront Blues Festival The Waterfront Blues Festival is an annual event that features 3 - 5 days of performances by top-tier blues musicians, both old favorites and the up-and-coming. The event began in 1988 and still takes place every year as of 2007. , Portland The biggest Northwest blues bash of the year returns to the banks of the Willamette this July 2-5. Grammy winner Keb' Mo' (July 2) joins the gospel-tinged blues artists the Holmes Brothers (July 2), boogie blues specialists Canned Heat (July 2), Cyril Neville and the Uptown Allstars (July 3) and many others. (www.waterfrontbluesfest .com) Rose Garden, Portland The Rose Garden lights up this summer with an array of artists. The sports arena hosts Kenny Chesney on June 19 and the American Idols! live show (insert your best Randy Jackson-style "yeauuuh" here) visits on July 16. Eric Clapton makes an appearance on July 28, his royal pop highness Prince stops off on Sept. 1 and multiple Grammy winner Norah Jones plays on Sept. 29. (www.rosequarter .com) White River Amphitheatre The White River Amphitheatre is located in Auburn, Washington, on the Muckleshoot Indian Reservation 15 miles northeast of Tacoma and 35 miles southeast of Seattle. It hosts musical events with many top performers and artists, providing a scenic view with Mount Rainier in the , Auburn, Wash. With Mount Rainier as its backdrop, there's always something to see at the White River Amphitheatre, which will host No Doubt and blink-182 on June 16 and Rush on July 2. A huge selection of Lollapalooza lol·la·pa·loo·za also lal·la·pa·loo·za n. Slang Something outstanding of its kind. And summer wouldn't be summer without Ozzfest. This year's lineup features a big surprise for metalers: the return of Black Sabbath. The former adult movie theater hosts Chan Marshall and Cat Power on May 28, Patty Griffin on June 20 and the Johnny Clegg Band on June 22. Steve Earle & the Bluegrass bluegrass, any species of the large and widely distributed genus Poa, chiefly range and pasture grasses of economic importance in temperate and cool regions. In general, bluegrasses are perennial with fine-leaved foliage that is bluish green in some species. Dukes make an appearance on June 28, and on July 6, the Richard Thompson Band takes the stage. (www.aladdin-theater .com) Rogue Theatre, Grants Pass The Rogue Theatre has scheduled a blues-heavy lineup for its summer season. The art deco theater hosts John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers today, Charlie Musselwhite on July 10 and Maria Muldaur on Aug. 28. Canned Heat comes through on Sept. 3 and George Winston makes an appearance on Sept. 11. Crystal Ballroom, Portland The Crystal Ballroom brings a host of rock acts to the heart of Portland this summer. Today, Cursive headlines the Plea for Peace Tour with Saul Williams, and Mike Park and Yo la Tengo play the historic room on May 28. J Mascis and the Fog J Mascis and The Fog is the post-Dinosaur Jr musical project embarked by Dinosaur Jr's founding member, musician J Mascis. After fulfilling his contractual obligations to Blanco y Negro in the UK and Sire Records/Reprise Records in the US, Mascis holed up in his home studio come through on June 5, Mission of Burma plays on June 6 and the Stills headline June 12. (www.mcmenamins.com) Roseland Theater, Portland The 1,400-capacity Roseland will light up this summer, starting with the Cardigans today, the Shins on Saturday and the Roots on Thursday. Tortoise comes through on May 30, Skinny Puppy returns on June 11 and P.O.D. plays a June 13 date. (www.doubletee .com/rose_schedule.shtml) Clark County Amphitheater, Ridgefield, Wash. This amphitheater 10 miles north of Portland hosts some heavy hitters, starting with Aerosmith on Saturday and continuing on with blink-182 and No Doubt on June 17 and KISS and Poison on June 22. John Mayer and Maroon 5 make an appearance on July 10 and Josh Groban sings on Aug. 27. For those staying in Portland, the venue offers free bus service from downtown Portland. (www.clarkcountyamp .com) Gorge Amphitheater, George, Wash. It's a long way to go for a concert, but who can pass up a lineup like the one at the Sasquatch! Music Festival Sasquatch! Music Festival is a music festival held annually at the Gorge Amphitheatre in George, Washington. It is presented by the House of Blues. There is an emphasis on indie rock bands and singer-songwriters, although there are also alternative rock and hip hop acts. on May 29. The bill includes the Roots, the Shins, Built to Spill Built to Spill is an American indie rock band based in Boise, Idaho. History Former Treepeople leader Doug Martsch formed Built to Spill in 1992 with Brett Netson and Ralf Youtz as the band's original members. , Sleater-Kinney and others. The Dead play with the Allman Brothers Band on July 3, Tim McGraw and the Dance Hall Doctors pay a visit on July 17 and the Dave Matthews Band is joined by Jason Mraz for three shows, Sept. 3-5. Hugh Masekela and Angelique Kidjo take the stage on June 11, Jewel plays on June 19, the Hopeful Gospel Quartet comes through with Garrison Keillor on June 23 and the Del McCoury Band The Del McCoury Band is a Grammy Award-winning bluegrass band. Originally Del McCoury and the Dixie Pals with Del on guitar and his brother Jerry on bass, the band went through a number of changes until the 1980s when the band solidified its line-up, adding McCoury's sons, Ronnie and Jerry Douglas play June 25. Macy Gray entertains on June 26, Burt Bacharach charms the crowds on July 1, Marc Cohn and Mindy Smith play on July 3 and LeAnn Rimes comes through on July 20. But get your tickets fast. Concerts by Huey Lewis and the News, Kenny Loggins and Heart already are sold out. (www .brittfest.org) Horning's Hideout, North Plains The Colorado-based jam band the String Cheese Incident returns for its annual three-day camping and music festival June 18-20 at Horning's Hideout, 20 miles west of Portland. This year's guests include Michael Franti and Spearhead, Sound Tribe Sector 9 and Keller Williams.
