Concerto for Orchestra; Four Orchestral Pieces; Hungarian Peasant Songs. (More Jazz Than Not).

(Telarc CD-80564)

I was excited to see that Telarc has released a new DSD-based recording of the Bartok Concerto for Orchestra Although a concerto is usually a piece of music for one or more solo instruments accompanied by a full orchestra, several composers have written works with the apparently contradictory title Concerto for Orchestra. . I can still remember the first time I heard this music through a set of headphones in the music listening library at Brigham Young University Brigham Young University, at Provo, Utah; Latter-Day Saints; coeducational; opened as an academy in 1875 and became a university in 1903. It is noted for its law and business schools.  about 25 years ago. I was transfixed. I have owned several recordings of this work, my favorites being those by Fritz Reiner and Pierre Boulez (both recordings feature the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Chicago Symphony Orchestra, founded in 1891 by Theodore Thomas, who conducted it until his death in 1905. Orchestra Hall was built for it in 1904 with funds raised by public subscription; the hall is now part of Symphony Center, which was completed in 1997. ).

A few years ago, Telarc released a recording of the Concerto conducted by Andre Previn. I was excited to think about hearing one of my favorite pieces of music in Telarc sound, but the performance was bland and disappointing. That CD did not stay in my collection very long at all.

Unfortunately, this new one is no better. I am no musicologist mu·si·col·o·gy

, but I must say I have never heard a more lifeless, boring performance of this music. Had I heard the Botstein performance back at BYU BYU Brigham Young University

BYU Bob's Your Uncle
BYU Bayreuth, Germany - Bindlacher Berg (Airport Code)
BYU Beyond Your Understanding
, I most likely would never have fallen in love with this music. Perhaps Telarc should give Zander, Spanos, or Jarvi a crack at this music.
