MANDOLINS and Neapolitan song will bring a breath of Madeiran sunshine to Huddersfield later this month. The Madeira Mandolin Orchestra will be in concert at Holy Trinity Church Holy Trinity Church, or variations on the name, may refer to: Churches

on July 21 in a concert with Portuguese tenor Carlos Guilherme.

This is the orchestra's first tour to the UK for several years and their arrival in Huddersfield is down to some very local connections, both here and on the sunshine island much loved by British tourS ists.

The orchestra was formed in 1913, making it one of the eldest established mandolin mandolin (măn'dəlĭn`, măn`dəlĭn'), musical instrument of the lute family, with a half-pear-shaped body, a fretted neck, and a variable number of strings, plucked with the fingers or with a plectrum.  orchestras in the world. But in terms of average of its musicians, it is considered to be the youngest in the world!

The musicians will be playing light classics in a series of 10 UK concerts which will feature Carlos Guilherme who will sing the familiar O Sole Mio, Santa Lucia and Funiculi funiculi

plural of funiculus.
, Funicula as well as other much loved Neapolitan songs. They are being hosted in Huddersfield by Holy Trinity Church and that connection was made thanks to Judith Weston, a former chaplain at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary The Huddersfield Royal Infirmary is a hospital situated in the English town of Huddersfield. It is situated in the suburb of Lindley and provides general services, emergency services and some specialist services. .

Judith, who maintains close connections in Huddersfield, spends part of her life in Madeira and is involved with Holy Trinity Church in the island's capital of Funchal.

When she heard that the island's mandolin orchestra was intending to tour the UK, one Huddersfield location immediately popped into her head, that of Holy Trinity Church, which also has a strong musical tradition.

Those connections between the town and the island have helped bring a very different musical sound to Huddersfield. The orchestra of almost 30 musicians is conducted by Eurico Martins and includes at least one member who is just seven years old. The younger members attend music practice every day and the youngest member plays in the weekly concerts on Madeira.

The concert in Huddersfield will raise funds for the West Yorkshire Forget Me Not Trust. Tickets are pounds 8 and pounds 5 from the church office on 01484 513213 or from Dennis Angel on 01484 309070.
