Concert season idles at starting gate.

Byline: Lewis Taylor The Register-Guard

Just like the summer movie season, which now seems to start at about the same time the groundhog looks for his shadow, summer concert time arrives earlier and earlier each year.

Luckily for us, we have the Willamette Valley Folk Festival - the unofficial start of the summer concert season - to prevent those summer shows from leaking out too early.

This being the Northwest, where summers tend to arrive a little bit later and last, well, as long as we can stretch them, our summer music guide will take you from the present until the pre-Halloween days.

There are lots of ways to look at what's ahead for music lovers this summer. Brendan Relaford, booking agent for the McDonald Theatre and for one of the area's newest potential venues - downtown Eugene's Broadway Plaza - is optimistic, although he predicted fewer big summer shows locally.

"I think it's picking up," Relaford said. "I think it's going to be good at a smaller level. The clubs will do great."

Others, such as Dan Steinberg, a Seattle-based music producer who has booked many of the shows at the Secret House Winery, are less enthusiastic - at least when it comes to the overall summer concert picture. He pointed to a number of different `repeat offender' classic rock acts that clutter up the concert market.

"It seems like there's a lot of the same," Steinberg said. "We saw it all last year. There are no real surprises."

Of course, lots can change in the course of a season, and shows still are being added to the summer music calendar. So, whether you're waiting for the perfect arena rock show to confirm, or are hoping to catch your favorite lo-fi experimental noise band in an intimate basement setting, don't give up.

May-June

It can be slim pickings for live music this time of year, as school winds down, the clubs clear out and the outdoor music venues break out the power washers. But there are plenty of shows happening.

Sleater-Kinney, the darlings of many a music critic, will bring their fiery punk rock to the McDonald Theatre on Tuesday. The combination of Corin Tucker's high-wire vocals, Carrie Brownstein's slashing guitar and Janet Weiss' propulsive drumming makes for a concert experience you won't want to miss.

Look for Weiss doing double duty with her other band, Quasi, which opens the show.

Other highlights for the season's opening weekend:
