Concerned about media consolidation?


Following the ruling on the FCC's rules for media ownership by the Third Court in Philadelphia, Consumer Federation of America The Consumer Federation of America (CFA) is a non-profit organization founded in 1968 to advance the consumer interest through research, education and advocacy.

The June 24, 2004 ruling "reinforces the public mandate for a diverse and democratic media," Mark Cooper, director of research for Consumer Federation of America, said. "The FCC (1) (Federal Communications Commission, Washington, DC, www.fcc.gov) The U.S. government agency that regulates interstate and international communications including wire, cable, radio, TV and satellite. The FCC was created under the U.S.  rules were never supported by public opinion; they can't drag their feet anymore."

CFA (Computer Fraud and Abuse Act of 1986) Signed into law in 1986, the CFA was a significant step forward in criminalizing unauthorized access to computer systems and networks. The Act applies to "federal interest computers" that include any system used by the U.S.  is publicly urging the White House and the FCC to accept the court's ruling and not resort to a protracted pro·tract

In order to keep the pressure on the FCC and the White House, CFA is also urging consumers to write the President and the FCC and voice their support for the court's ruling. "Public outcry was essential to bringing this issue to the forefront," Cooper said. "We must continue to let our voices be heard."

In conjunction with that campaign, CFA has launched a website to mobilize consumers around issues of media and communications. You may access the new Communications and Media Policy website via a link on CFA's main site, www.consumerfed.com.

CFA is a nonprofit association of 300 consumer groups, representing 50 million people.
