Concern over rise in fire deaths.

Latest statistics reveal there were 59 deaths in 2007 caused by fire - a 13 per cent rise on the 52 fatalities recorded in 2006.

The Scottish government's chief statistician released the figures, which include key statistics on the number and location of fires in Scotlandalong with details of fire casualties.

Figures for 2008 and 2009 are not yet available but the number of injuries in 2007 was also up by five per cent on the previous year, with 1722 victims.

There were 45,912 fires in 2007, nine per cent lower than the 50,520 recorded in 2006.

Minister for Community Safety Fergus Ewing Fergus Ewing (born 23 September 1957, Glasgow) is a Scottish National Party (SNP) MSP. He is the son of the veteran Scottish Nationalist Winnie Ewing (his father was also an SNP councillor) and has long been active in the SNP.  said: "Although I welcome the reduction in fires, it is disappointing that there has been a rise in the number of fire deaths, although there were fewer fire deaths in the home.

"It is also disappointing to note that the majority of deaths still occur in homes not fitted with a working smoke alarm."
