Concern About the Signs of Appendicitis

Appendicitis is the inflammation of appendix supposedly due to narrowing of this lumen. That narrowing may be caused by hyperplasia of appendix (means too big growth, overgrowth of the tissue). That variant happens in children mostly.

Appendicitis is the inflammation of appendix supposedly due to narrowing of this lumen. That narrowing may be caused by hyperplasia of appendix (means too big growth, overgrowth of the tissue). That variant happens in children mostly. Another variant - is fecalith (small stony fecal material) that impacts into the appendix lumen. That is seen in young adults mostly.

Appendicitis is considered to be a surgical illness. Due to its severe character, the treatment for appendicitis often involves surgical intervention. Judging by the speed of development and the gravity of the illness, appendicitis can be either acute or chronic. Acute appendicitis evolves very fast and can lead to complications. Chronic appendicitis is less serious and slower to develop. Although there are other options, the safest treatment for appendicitis is considered to be surgery.

Anyone can develop appendicitis, regardless of age and sex. However, the illness has a higher incidence in men. Also, children with ages between 3-15 are exposed the most too developing acute appendicitis. Elderly people and patients with special conditions usually develop atypical acute appendicitis.

If appendicitis is discovered in time and treated appropriately, the patients fully recover within weeks. However, if the illness is discovered late, it may lead to serious complications (perforation, gangrene, sepsis).

The surgical intervention performed in acute appendicitis is called appendectomy. If acute appendicitis is treated in time, the patients recover quickly and effortless. Most patients are fully recovered within 4 weeks from surgery. However, in the case of complicated acute appendicitis, the patients require special monitoring before and long after the surgical treatment.
Complicated acute appendicitis is life-threatening and the rate of mortality in patients with this form of illness is considerably high. Acute appendicitis requires immediate treatment.

Although the mortality rate of people with appendicitis has considerably decreased in the last decades, the illness is still considered to be a medical emergency. Considering the gravity of the illness, you should see a doctor even you have the slightest symptom of appendicitis. If the symptoms of appendicitis are intense, you may have already developed complications and prompt medical intervention is required. Pay attention to the symptoms of appendicitis and remember that this illness can be life-threatening!

Appendicitis in general refers to obstruction of the vermiform appendix and internal bacterial infection. The appendix is a tubular extension of the large intestine and its function is thought to be related with the process of digestion. When the appendix is blocked by calculus and feces or it is squeezed by the lymph nodes (due to bacterial infection, the lymph nodes usually become swollen and press against the appendix), it swells and usually doesn't receive enough blood. Bacteria grow inside the appendix, eventually causing its death. Acute appendicitis involves complete obstruction and fast deterioration of the appendix.
