Concentra reveals radical electrical system configurator.

BURLINGTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 3, 1997--

Concentra's New Vehicle Electrical-Systems-Design Software Does

It Right In Five Days Instead Of Almost Right In Nine Months!

Concentra Corporation (Nasdaq: CTRA CTRA Canadian Therapeutic Recreation Association
CTRA College Terrace Residents' Association
CTRA Canadian Telecommunications Resellers Alliance
CTRA Committee To Restore America
) today announced that it has solved one of the auto industry's biggest problems - how to optimize electrical configuration for weight, cost and reliability and at the same time significantly reduce the single biggest cause of warranty claims - electrical problems.

I.C.E. ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS DESIGN, (I.C.E.- E.S.D), launched today, is the latest and likely to be one of the most beneficial modules of Integrated Car Engineer (I.C.E.), which was itself launched in the USA at Autofact '96 and in Europe at the '96 Geneva Geneva, canton and city, Switzerland
Geneva (jənē`və), Fr. Genève, canton (1990 pop. 373,019), 109 sq mi (282 sq km), SW Switzerland, surrounding the southwest tip of the Lake of Geneva.
Motor Show. I.C.E. automates the last remaining labor-intensive stage of the production process, concept design.

The potential value of I.C.E.-E.S.D to the motor industry is huge. Automotive sources give the average cost of the connective wiring system at around $500 per vehicle. If the electrical system were optimized an estimated 10-20 percent of the cost could be saved, which on the annual production run of just one vehicle represents a saving of $25-50m. In addition I.C.E.-E.S.D can be used to design-out electrical problems which account for a large proportion of all warranty claims, representing an estimated 20-25 percent of warranty costs. Improvements in cost and reliability are not the only benefits - increased customer satisfaction is a bonus.

Until today, the electrical design process has been served by a variety of computer-aided design computer-aided design (CAD) or computer-aided design and drafting (CADD), form of automation that helps designers prepare drawings, specifications, parts lists, and other design-related elements using special graphics- and calculations-intensive  tools, each supporting particular aspects of the overall process: 2D CAD systems which help the engineer to define and record the electrical connectivity; 3D CAD systems which help the engineer to package the physical electrical system; database systems which pass data between the tools; and a variety of diagnostic packages which can validate aspects of the design. Each one of these tools is valuable, but in reality, they support only a fragment of the task of electrical system design. The real task is performed by engineers who must integrate and manage a vast number of conflicting design parameters using the various tools to create the final design - and it is easy to make mistakes.

I.C.E.-E.S.D revolutionizes the electrical design process, reducing the typical design cycle from a probable nine months to a possible five days. It redefines the electrical design process as two interlocking interlocking /in·ter·lock·ing/ (-lok´ing) closely joined, as by hooks or dovetails; locking into one another.

parts: high level design specifications, and routine, rule-driven detail. I.C.E.-E.S.D automates the time-consuming, routine detail, allowing engineers to work with high-level input specifications. Supporting the full design cycle from concept through to manufacture, a complete error-free design - schematics, geometry, parts, connectivity, cost and weight - can be created in less than an hour, allowing engineers to explore a vast range of design options before creating that elusive optimum design.

As all this expert knowledge is `at its fingertips', it's like focusing the concentrated skills of an organization on each concept.

Said Larry Rosenfeld, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Concentra Corporation and the creator of KBE: "I.C.E.-E.S.D is set to be a winning addition to the I.C.E. family of applications. It is available as a stand-alone solution or as part of a suite of software ready to empower the next generation of auto designer. Knowledge Based Engineering is now perceived as a vital tool for the survival and prosperity of large manufacturing concerns and Concentra is at the heart of it."

The term "Design paradigm" is used within the design professions, including architecture, industrial design and engineering design, to indicate an archetypal solution.  and the developer of I.C.E.-E.S.D said: "We set out to create a real tool which would fulfill a real need. We did it using Concentra's state of the art KBE software, ICAD, and we are delighted that I.C.E.-E.S.D has passed their stringent quality controls to become an I.C.E. module. Pre-announcement discussions and demonstrations with several world-leading automotive electrical companies have already fully endorsed the I.C.E.-E.S.D approach."

About the ICAD System

The ICAD System is an advanced software tool which enables an organization to harness geometric definitions along with an expert knowledge base of product rules, performance data, legislative and safety codes and design and manufacturing best practice. It automates product development from concept to production. The ICAD System's generative technology has been proven in countless design automation applications for world-leading companies in the Automotive, Aerospace and Industrial Products Industries. It fills the hitherto unautomated void of concept design and regularly provides returns on investment and productivity gains in excess of 50 percent.
