Con-Way Western Express Honored For Safety By California Trucking Association.

Food processing, the manufacture of aircraft, and tourism are important to the city's economy. , Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 10, 1997--Con-Way Western Express (CWX), a regional less-than-truckload (LTL LTL - Linear Temporal Logic ) motor carrier, has been named one of California's safest trucking companies in an annual competition sponsored by the California Trucking Association (CTA An abbreviation for cum testamento annexo, Latin for "with the will annexed." ).

The award marks the second consecutive year the CTA has recognized CWX for exemplary safety performance. Each year, the CTA sponsors its Fleet Safety Contest in which the association evaluates and ranks the safety performance of the state's trucking companies. CWX's fleet operations ranked second in the division measuring regional LTL, general commodities motor carriers with over four million miles annually. LTL carriers consolidate freight shipments from multiple customers into single trailers for transportation.

The CTA Fleet Safety Contest measures the safety performance of trucking companies based on such criteria as accident frequency, personnel and hiring systems, documented safety policies and procedures Policies and Procedures are a set of documents that describe an organization's policies for operation and the procedures necessary to fulfill the policies. They are often initiated because of some external requirement, such as environmental compliance or other governmental , maintenance programs, driver-safety training, internal accident handling procedures, and participation in the association's safety activities.

Companies who qualify for the competition are audited by safety professionals from CTA's Safety Management Council. Audit information and accident statistics are reviewed by an independent panel composed of trucking and safety experts. Results from this year's competition were based on 1996 performance statistics.

CTA promotes trucking safety in working directly with individual trucking companies and by lobbying state and federal governments for truck-safety measures. The association supports truck driver drug testing and extensive truck safety training requirements, as part of overall trucking regulatory reform Regulatory Reform concerns improvements to the quality of government regulation.
