Groundbreaking for $7.5 million facility October 27

Con-Way Southern Express (CSE (Certified Systems Engineer) See Microsoft certification. ) announced today it is expanding operations in the greater Atlanta metropolitan area The Atlanta metropolitan area, commonly referred to as metro Atlanta in Georgia, is the ninth-largest metropolitan area in the United States and consists of up to 28 counties in Georgia.  with the construction of a new 100-door service center in Lawrenceville. The new facility will more than double the company's freight handling capacity for servicing the freight transportation needs of local businesses. A groundbreaking is scheduled for October 27 at 10 am.

The company, which provides regional less-than-truckload freight services for commercial and industrial shippers, cited growing demand as one of the key reasons for construction of the new facility, which is scheduled for completion in April 2000. . This expansion will ensure that we continue to meet that expectation," said John T. Hickerson, president and chief executive officer of CSE.

The state-of-the art facility, on 54 acres at 1449 Oakland in Lawrenceville, replaces an existing smaller 44-door service center in Norcross. "With 100 doors and the ability to expand in the future to 150, our freight handling capacity and service levels will continue to be the best in the business," added Hickerson. CSE was recently cited in an industry survey of traffic managers as one of the top carriers in the South. The company has received the top rating in six out of the last ten years.

The new facility will have 100 loading doors, over 60,000 square feet of dock space "under roof," a 13,000 square foot shop and fueling area and 6,500 square feet of offices.

CON-WAY serves more than 400 businesses in the northeast quadrant of the greater Atlanta metropolitan area and handles 1 million pounds of freight a day. The facility will employee 150 people and operate a fleet of 50 tractors and 100 trailers. Scott Watkins will manage the facility. Darold Bishop will be personnel supervisor.

Customers using the new facility will receive next-day service to all points in Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, South and North Carolina North Carolina, state in the SE United States.
