Con-Way Plans to Hold Rates Steady for Remainder of 1998.

ANN ARBOR, Mich.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 5, 1998--Con-Way Transportation Services has announced that it does not intend to increase general freight rates the remainder of this year. This plan to maintain current rates through year-end applies to its three principal regional, less-than-truckload carriers: Con-Way Central Express (CCX), Con-Way Southern Express (CSE) and Con-Way Western Express (CWX).

"In response to customer inquiries, Con-Way has decided there is no need to raise prices prior to January, 1999," said Gerald Detter, president and chief executive officer of Con-Way. "Many LTL carriers have recently raised their rates, some as high as six percent, and some as early as last August, in an effort to improve their margins," Detter noted.

"Rather than raise our rates, Con-Way continues to improve productivity and efficiency in its offering of premium LTL services to our customers," Detter added.
