Con-Way Central Express Opens New Louisville Facility; New Freight Assembly Center Reduces Transit Times Between Midwest and South.

LOUISVILLE, Ky.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 6, 2000

Con-Way Central Express (CCX) announced today that a new high-volume freight assembly center (FAC) in Louisville, KY will begin full operations on July 10. The company moved into the facility in early June.

The new facility at 6300 Geil Lane will provide additional freight handling capacity to local businesses and, company officials stressed, have a significant impact on freight delivery times in a number of other markets throughout the South and Midwest. The company, based in Ann Arbor, MI, is a less-than-truckload commercial freight carrier.

"This new facility adds significant freight handling capacity to our system and is part of our infrastructure plan to provide the most efficient and expedient freight shipping network in the industry," said Richard V. Palazzo, president and chief executive officer of CCX. "American business is constantly accelerating these days. This new facility will enable us to reduce transit times for our customers by increasing the number of next-day deliveries," added Palazzo.

According to company officials, the new facility's capacity and ability to accept more freight from its sister company, Con-Way Southern Express (CSE), will create 60 new next-day delivery lanes that previously had delivery times of two days. Major markets in the South and Midwest that will have reduced transit times to and from Louisville include: Nashville, Indianapolis, St. Louis, Knoxville, Memphis, Ft. Wayne, Dayton, Springfield, IL, and Columbus, Ohio. In total, next-day service will be made available to a combination of 670,000 five-digit postal ZIP codes.

The new 24-acre site at Geil Lane will give the company closer access to I-65, a major highway, and replace the CCX facility at 2220 South Seventh Street. The new facility will also be better located for local business customers by being closer to more of the metropolitan and industrial areas within Louisville. Total size of the freight handling facility is 40,000 square feet with 32,000 square feet of dock area and 8,000 square feet of office space. The new terminal has 50 more docking doors than the former facility and the ability to add an additional 80 doors as business volumes dictate.

David Dennison is the service center manager of the new facility. He has been in the freight transportation industry for 23 years. He joined CON-WAY in 1987 as service center manager in Huntington, WV and was promoted to service center manager at Louisville in 1994.
