For pianists who were born during the 20th century, the name Schnabel carries almost mythical significance. The professional careers of Artur Schnabel Noun 1. The title of the DVD, Con Brio, comes from a discussion during a master class. In conversation with a student, Karl Ulrich Schnabel probes "What is the difference between the expressive markings con fuoco and con brio?" The title explores an important distinction between playing with temperament (con fuoco) and bringing to a performance the more elusive quality Elusive Quality (born 1993) is a thoroughbred racehorse who holds the world record for one mile on turf, 1 minute 31.6 seconds, set in the 1998 Poker Handicap.

The format of this DVD presents excerpts of numerous master classes held in New York, Israel and Italy. In spite of frequent shifts in location, the DVD flows easily through the lives of great musicians. The content includes extensive use of stock film footage and historical photographs. This DVD also presents insightful comments from some of Uli Schnabel's most famous students including Leon Fleisher, Claude Frank, Richard Goode and Peter Serkin.

It would have been even more valuable, however, if the newer technology had been utilized in order to provide more extensive information. Much of the material available on the website of the Schnabel Music Foundation, www.schnabelmusicfoundation.com, including an extensive gallery of family photographs, listings of recordings and biographical information about members of the Schnabel Family, would have enhanced this significant project.

The filmwork of Con Brio presents many compelling close-up shots of hands and faces. The well-lined face of Uli Schnabel conveys a delightful vitality and reflects his impish imp·ish
