GSM-R is a specially designed GSM wireless communication system adapted to meet the specific needs of railroad companies, and has been accepted as the standard railroad communication system throughout Europe. In addition to the standard GSM capabilities, GSM-R helps railroad operators to undertake specific tasks (guard/conductor to driver communication, shunting, cross-border communication, instant communication between train and station staff) on networks that may extend for thousands of miles and on trains that may be travelling at high speeds.

"We are proud to contribute to improving safety and communications systems for railroad operators by providing voicemail and SMS systems based on GSM-R to JBV and RHK," said Eli Lifshitz, Account Director for Comverse. "This relationship reinforces our growing presence in the Scandinavian market and our ability to provide products for all segments of the market. It also demonstrates the added value that our agreement with Siemens provides to carriers around the world, and the synergy that both companies enjoy as a result of this cooperation."

Cooperation between Siemens and Comverse began in 1996 with the signing of a Global Framework Contract between the companies, and includes a large number of Value-Added Services (VAS vas (vas) pl. va´ sa  [L.] vessel.va´sal
