) announced today that its Tempe, Arizona-based subsidiary, Comtech EF Data Corp., was awarded a $1.2 million order for satellite communications equipment. A government customer will utilize the equipment to support a major, multi-year program.

Included in the order is Comtech EF Data's SLM-5650 Satellite Modem with a network processor module and Federal Information Processing Standards (standard) Federal Information Processing Standards - (FIPS) United States Government technical standards published by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).  (FIPS (Federal Information Processing Standards) A series of publications issed by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) that specifies information security guidelines for federal government departments and agencies. ) module. The SLM-5650 Satellite Modem complies with the requirements of the Defense Satellite Communications System Geosynchronous military communications satellites that provide high data rate communications for military forces, diplomatic corps, and the White House. The Defense Satellite Communications System provides long-haul super-high frequency 7/8 gigahertz voice and high data rate  (DSCS) defined in Military Standard (MIL-STD MIL-STD Military Standard )-188-165A, modem types I, II, IV, V and VI. This high-speed modem supports data rates up to 155 Mbps, and offers flexible interfaces including Gigabit Ethernet, advanced forward error correction A communications technique that can correct bad data on the receiving end. Before transmission, the data are processed through an algorithm that adds extra bits for error correction. If the transmitted message is received in error, the correction bits are used to repair it.  and higher order modulation. It is compact and rugged, ideally suited for many government and military applications, such as fixed, at-the-pause and on-the-move communications. The optional modules will enable compatibility with Comtech EF Data's bandwidth and capacity management, Vipersat Management System, for a seamless IP-based infrastructure for satellite networking.
