Commander Decision 1.3 is now available including any one of three databases -- today's release of Commander Decision is available with Oracle Express, Applix TM1, or Arbor Software's Essbase database. These multidimensional databases offer Comshare's customized application customers dramatically extended options for enterprise decision support applications.

"Comshare has broken new ground in providing customers with high-level, pre-built applications offering a choice of the three leading OLAP (OnLine Analytical Processing) Decision support software that allows the user to quickly analyze information that has been summarized into multidimensional views and hierarchies. OLAP tools are used to perform trend analysis on sales and financial information.  engines," says Nigel Pendse Nigel Pendse is OLAP analyst and the lead person responsible of The OLAP Report and The OLAP Survey, and is an advisor and speaker on a variety of OLAP related subjects. Previously, he had worked both as a user and then in a variety of roles as a salesperson of business , co-author, The OLAP Report.

"We were able to make Commander Decision work with Express and TM1 very quickly because of our work up front with the Comshare Application Architecture(TM) (CAA Caa

See CCC.
). The CAA is an architecture that loads much of the application functionality in the application server, so it supports the rapid delivery of applications on new platforms without reinventing the wheel Reinventing the wheel is a phrase that means a generally accepted technique or solution is ignored in favor of a locally invented solution. To "reinvent the wheel" is to duplicate a basic method that has long since been accepted and even taken for granted. ," says Dennis Ganster, Comshare's Senior Vice President of Product Development.

"More evidence of the openness of the CAA is that applications using both Express and TM1 are automatically accessible through Commander DecisionWeb(TM), which is our Internet-based browser enhancement to the Comshare Application Architecture." Comshare customer reaction to the new partnerships has been favorable. "Conceptually, these new agreements are very interesting. We're a big user of Oracle, and anything that helps us exploit our existing technology is a good development for us," says Comshare customer Richard Cribb, Business Finance Analyst, Transco. "These announcements are good news from our perspective," says Bill Getchell, Director of Financial Analysis and Planning, MicroTouch, also a Comshare customer. "The new agreements should be good for Comshare, and for us, the option to choose from multiple databases could give us additional flexibility some time in the future."

Wally Wrathall, Comshare's President and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  says: "Many of our customers want to base decision support applications on their data warehouses and data marts. Our integration with Oracle Express gives Comshare the benefit of the market's natural evolution to Oracle8's planned support of OLAP." For example, one button in Commander Decision shows you any problems you might have at lower levels of the hierarchy, so you don't have to go searching through the whole massive database to find problems. That is a built-in function we don't have to code," says Richard Cribb, Business Finance Analyst, Transco. Today's release of Commander Decision provides application developers with a head start in developing decision support applications based on any of the three databases, Express, Essbase, or TM1.
