XML for Analysis is an open-standards based Application Programming Interface (API) that id designed specifically for standardizing the data access interaction between a client application and an analytical data provider working over the Web. XML for Analysis is based on the open industry standards of XML and SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol (protocol) Simple Object Access Protocol - (SOAP) A minimal set of conventions for invoking code using XML over HTTP.

The standard will be maintained on an interim basis by an XML for Analysis council, which is comprised of representatives from Hyperion, Microsoft, other OLAP (OnLine Analytical Processing) Decision support software that allows the user to quickly analyze information that has been summarized into multidimensional views and hierarchies. OLAP tools are used to perform trend analysis on sales and financial information.  vendors that support the specification, and front-end software vendors, including Comshare. The first meeting of the council will be summer 2001. When the council deems the specification has matured sufficiently, it will be released to a standards body for maintenance.
