relevant information for analysis from what would otherwise be an overwhelming amount of data," says Dave King, Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer for Comshare.

"The agreement between Comshare and InXight has reached its first logical union in Comshare's flagship decision support software," agrees Lance Lane, Comshare Product Manager for Decision. "It takes the visual understanding of large volumes of data to a whole new level for our customers."

The integrated, in-depth support for Comshare's proactive alerting technology, Detect & Alert(R), and support for future releases of underlying databases, including the upcoming release of Arbor arbor

Software's Essbase 5.0 database, as well as Oracle's Express and Applix's TM1 was also emphasized in the release.

About Commander Decision ________________________

Commander Decision is a decision support, planning, analysis, and reporting system that promotes innovative thinking, identifies alternative courses of action, and monitors progress for thousands of Comshare business users. Their goal is to get their arms around an increasingly larger and more complex set of data, from which they need to make management decisions. Commander Decision incorporates best of breed database technology. Customers can choose between Oracle's Express, Applix's TM1 and Arbor's Essbase multidimensional databases See OLAP. , selecting the database with the properties that suit their needs best.

Comshare's products are built to take advantage of the advances in the database technologies of Comshare's partners, while continuing to add value above the base functionality of the database. For example, currently a pre-release version of Essbase version 5.0 is being tested with Comshare applications to insure compatibility and function. All databases embedded Inserted into. Current Commander Decision customers are realizing productivity gains daily "Commander Decision is clearly helping us make better decisions," says Colin Johnson Colin Johnson is the current Anglican Bishop of Toronto. He is an alumnus of Trinity College in the University of Toronto.

, Manager District Operations, Hadrian District, Transco, part of BG PLC, the pipeline and storage division of the UK's gas business. "The application gives us a unique opportunity to work directly with our cost base so we can see the effects of decisions out in the field. This application allows us to give all of our users a single source of the truth and promotes awareness of exactly how we're doing throughout the company."

-- Decision is also designed to provide developers a way to produce highly functional, low-maintenance applications quickly. These applications include performance analysis; sales and marketing analysis; financial reporting and analysis; and budgeting. Decision's interface presents business intelligence to end users in several ways including:

-- Graphically, with charts.

-- Geographically, with an integrated mapping system.

-- Visually, with color-coded exception reporting.

-- Analytically, with ad hoc queries A non-standard inquiry. An ad hoc query is created to obtain information as the need arises. Contrast with a query that is predefined and routinely performed. See query and ad hoc.  and calculations.

-- Proactively, using Comshare's Detect and Alert.

"Using advanced visualization techniques and Comshare's own Intelligent Component Expansion(TM) (ICE), Comshare raises the bar for decision support applications that make decision making easier for our customers," continues Lane. Comshare brought much to end users in the version 2.0 Commander Decision, released last June, including:

-- Support for "disconnected" users allowing users to work when they're on the road or at home.

-- Write-back capabilities to the Essbase database allowing users to enter data and write it back to the underlying database - essential in many decision support applications such as budgeting.

In addition to Arbor's Essbase database, write-back capabilities to Oracle's Express and Applix's TM1 databases will be available to customers using the Decision 2.1 release.

About Advanced Visualization ____________________________

"In Commander Decision 2.1, users will have the state-of-the-art use of InXight's advanced visualization software," says Lane. "It overcomes the limitations of ordinary graphical user interfaces graphical user interface (GUI)

Using this advanced visualization technique, users can instantaneously shift from overviews that establish context and perspective, to detailed close-ups that focus on specific information. With a clear picture of the information and how elements relate to one another, users can make better decisions. "Commander Decision will let decision makers gain quick perspective on the vast amounts of information they access from multidimensional databases," continues Lane. According to according to

As a result, Comshare customers will be able to make sense of the information in front of them much more easily."

About Detect and Alert ______________________

In addition to the leap forward in visualization capabilities, Commander Decision 2.1 also provides complete Detect and Alert capabilities. Detect and Alert is an innovative use of technology, created by Comshare developers. A built-in "guided analysis" technique, Detect & Alert is used for routine surveillance of information. Application developers or end users can have software agents proactively monitor trends, patterns, etc. in their databases looking for Looking for

anomalies. When a problem occurs, Decision's Detect and Alert notifies the user about the existence of the anomaly, and presents the information for further analysis. Users are freed from the need to constantly look for exceptions. Decision software does it for them, allowing users to concentrate on other issues. Comshare's advanced exception technology helps surface hidden exceptions in multidimensional data, and "data-aware" objects like grids, maps, and charts which automatically model the underlying data source. By providing routine surveillance at every level of the application's hierarchy, Commander Decision 2.1 provides a new level of decision support.

According to Richard Cribb, Business Finance Analyst for Transco, "Commander Decision itself has significant built-in functionality for our financial decision support system beyond the database alone. Commander Decision lets you see what's going on What's Going On is a record by American soul singer Marvin Gaye. Released on May 21, 1971 (see 1971 in music), What's Going On reflected the beginning of a new trend in soul music.  immediately in a large database. (Pushing) one button shows you any problems you might have at lower levels of the hierarchy, so you don't have to go searching through the whole massive database to find problems. That is one of the built-in functions of Commander Decision we don't have to code."
