Compuware ships risk assessment tool for year 2000 problem; XPEDITER/Xchange integrates with industry-leading tools to bring immediate aid to date change headaches.

FARMINGTON HILLS Far·ming·ton Hills

A city of southeast Michigan, an industrial suburb of Detroit. Population: 81,400.
, Mich.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 22, 1995--Companies can quickly identify computer programs at risk of faltering as the year 2000 approaches with the help of Compuware Corporation's new XPEDITER/Xchange tool.

Thousands of computer systems at businesses around the world make projections and comparisons, execute sorts and update files based on the last two digits of the calendar year. Simply stated, programs in these systems can incorrectly register the ``00'' in the year 2000 as less than the ``99'' in 1999. Left unchanged, these programs will generate inaccurate results or, worse, trigger system outages.

``I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

of any company that's confident their mission-critical systems will run flawlessly on Monday, Jan. 3, 2000,'' said Michael Connor, a Compuware product manager. ``With XPEDITER/Xchange, organizations can determine the extent of their exposure to century date problems. Once they've taken that first step, they can use Xchange together with other trusted, industry-leading tools from Compuware to move their year 2000 effort along faster and with greater accuracy.''

XPEDITER/Xchange will create an inventory of programs that request the date or time from the mainframe and simulate any date or time during a test of these programs. XPEDITER/Xchange also can check for leap year leap year: see calendar. , month-end and other date-related processing problems.

Bristol & West Building Society, a financial institution in the United Kingdom, views XPEDITER/Xchange as a valuable tool for routine programming tasks as well as a solution for future year 2000 efforts. Using Xchange to simulate certain dates, Bristol & West demonstrated on a new release of a financial application that Xchange enabled more meaningful testing of date-based reconciliation. The testing of this application was more thorough with Xchange, said Steve Cole This article is about the American tenor saxophonist. ``Xchange will be helpful on an ongoing basis as a complement to our standard testing process,'' Cole said. ``Another benefit is that we can reuse PLAYBACK test scripts with Xchange simulating different dates.''

An Integrated Solution _______________________

The process of eliminating year 2000 problems from computer programs involves more than expanding year fields. XPEDITER/Xchange is integrated with Compuware's XPEDITER, File-AID, PLAYBACK and Hiperstation products to take companies from impact analysis through unit, system and stress testing Determining the durability of a system by pushing it to its limits. Stress testing a network is performed by transmitting excessive numbers of packets or attempting to break in illegally. . Compuware also offers professional services (job) professional services - A department of a supplier providing consultancy and programming manpower for the supplier's products.  to assist organizations with their conversions.

The first step is targeting programs that have trouble processing the new century date. Once that's done, developers can trace through date and time relationships in a program with XPEDITER to see what may need to be fixed, identify the best solution and, in some cases, make the repair. With XPEDITER, they can also test and debug To correct a problem in hardware or software. Debugging software means locating the errors in the source code (the program logic). Debugging hardware means finding errors in the circuit design (logical circuits) or in the physical interconnections of the circuits.  changes at a unit or system level. In cases where more analysis help is needed. Compuware offers XPEDITER+, a graphical, workstation-based development tool.

File-AID automates the addition of new century fields and expansion of existing date fields from two digits to four. The product also provides source library reporting capabilities for date- and time-related data items. PLAYBACK and Hiperstation create test scripts by capturing everyday production workloads then replay the scripts to stress test modified programs.
