Computerized Medical Systems, Inc. (CMS), the worldwide market share leader in radiation therapy planning systems, announced today that it has signed a technology licensing agreement with NumeriX to incorporate hyper-accelerated Monte Carlo simulation technology for application into the FOCUS(R) Radiation Therapy Treatment Planning System.

This makes Monte Carlo usable in clinical applications for the first time.

The simulation gold standard for accuracy in Radiation Therapy Planning is Monte Carlo. Monte Carlo systems have not been usable in routine application due to the excessive time required by computers to perform all of the calculations. The standard approaches to the performance problem have been to use unrealistically expensive and non-standard multiprocessor computer platforms that "divide and conquer" the intensive mathematical tasks involved or techniques that reduce the accuracy. NumeriX has developed mathematical techniques that allow Monte Carlo calculations for treatment planning to be completed in several minutes on standard treatment planning platforms without compromising the accuracy.
