Computer takes over 160 jobs.

Byline: BY SAM LISTER Daily Post Staff

MORE than 160 jobs are being axed at a Liverpool health authority centre because a new computer system will be able to do the work instead.

The Temple Square office of the Prescription Pricing Authority (PPA PPA 1. Palpation, Percussion & Ausculation 2. Pittsburgh pneumonia agent 3. Postpartum amenorrhea 4. Price per accession 5. Pure pulmonary atresia ) will close next year once the pounds 30m system has been installed.

Unison, which represents more than 80 workers at the site, have vowed to fight the job losses.

Peter Chapman, regional officer said: "While staff were aware of the development of the new system and have in the past seen the introduction of new technology and were therefore expecting some job losses, the scale of these redundancies and the timescale have come as a great shock.

"A lot of Unison members have worked at the PPA for a considerable length of time and could well have difficulty finding alternative employment.

"Add to this, the closure of the site and the implications this will have for the local economy and this becomes a very serious blow to the region.

"We will be consulting all Unison members in the PPA, and we intend to challenge the company and to mitigate the worst excesses of their plans.

"Unison and its representatives are fully committed (Law) committed to prison for trial, in distinction from being detained for examination.

"However, given the numbers involved this will be very difficult, and we cannot rule out industrial action at some stage in the near future.

"While this has been established to cut costs, it would appear the agenda consists purely of job cuts and redundancies."

Across the country 600 jobs will be lost, reducing the workforce by two thirds and the number of sites reduced from nine to three, saving pounds 20m.

All four North West sites will be shut down and staff will have to apply for jobs at a new centre near Bolton.

The PPA will begin the closure programme from March next year with the Liverpool office shutting in September.
