Computer Network Technology and StorageTek Deliver SAN Solutions for Storage-Intensive Applications.

LOUISVILLE, Colo. & MINNEAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 24, 1999--

CNT (Carbon NanoTube) See nanotube.  Certifies StorageTek's 9840 Tape Drive; Provides Customers with Speed, High-Capacity and Access to Data

Computer Network Technology (CNT(R)) and StorageTek(TM) (Storage Technology Corp., NYSE NYSE

See: New York Stock Exchange
:STK) today announced that CNT has certified StorageTek's 9840 tape drive with CNT's UltraNet(R) Storage Director, a high-speed switching platform that allows users to move and share data among diverse servers and storage systems. CNT is the first networking company to certify its SAN solutions with StorageTek's 9840, a tape drive that is engineered for new, storage-intensive applications such as data warehousing See data warehouse.

, medical imaging, digital media management and scientific computing. The 9840 is also certified with StorageTek's StorageNet(TM) family of products.

"StorageTek is committed to delivering enterprise-wide SAN solutions for its entire family of storage products. The high-performance and reliability characteristics of the 9840 tape drive make it a powerful storage resource as customers begin to implement SANs. Our interoperability The capability of two or more hardware devices or two or more software routines to work harmoniously together. For example, in an Ethernet network, display adapters, hubs, switches and routers from different vendors must conform to the Ethernet standard and interoperate with each other.  testing with CNT underscores our commitment to certifying our products in a wide range of open SAN environments," said Gary Francis, vice president, Enterprise Nearline(R) business group at StorageTek. "This certification enables us to support a broader range of applications and deliver increased throughput, fast access, capacity and reliability."

"As a leader in SAN solutions for performance critical applications, CNT is pleased to certify StorageTek's 9840, a high-end enterprise tape solution that complements our enterprise SAN solutions," said Mark Knittel, vice president of marketing and business development at CNT. "Our customers need to bridge islands of information and accomplish this by creating a SAN to consolidate server and storage resources. With this certification, CNT adds to its proven solutions that enable the extension of a mainframe tape drive technology into the open enterprise, preserving existing mainframe investments."

StorageTek's 9840 test configuration included an MVS (Multiple Virtual Storage) Introduced in 1974, the primary operating system used with IBM mainframes (the others are VM and DOS/VSE). MVS is a batch processing-oriented operating system that manages large amounts of memory and disk space.  host running OS/390 2.5. The UltraNet Storage Director nodes were ESCON-attached to the host and tape device with T3 links between the UltraNet Storage Director nodes. The results of the tests were quite impressive and found key benefits in the integration of these technologies in:

- Advanced data management and operations; - Flexible and increased productivity by enabling large and small

amounts of business, scientific, and medical images to be retrieved

or moved; - Reduced back-up and restore window; and - Increased ability to stack data.

The UltraNet Storage Director

The UltraNet Storage Director is a high-speed switching platform that allows users to move and share data among diverse servers and storage systems. It optimizes WAN circuit utilization, and enables cost-effective server and storage consolidation among IBM's OS/390, Microsoft's Windows NT (Windows New Technology) A 32-bit operating system from Microsoft for Intel x86 CPUs. NT is the core technology in Windows 2000 and Windows XP (see Windows). Available in separate client and server versions, it includes built-in networking and preemptive multitasking. , and open systems (UNIX UNIX

) storage systems platforms.

StorageTek 9840 Tape Drive

StorageTek's 9840 tape drive spans the enterprise from MVS to UNIX to Windows NT. The 9840 was engineered to provide a never-before-achieved combination of high performance, fast data access, high capacity and reliability with widely scalable automation. The customers' storage investments are protected with support of mixed media libraries through concurrent integration of the 9840 with one or more drive types (including TimberLine timberline, elevation above which trees cannot grow.
