Computer Network Technology Corporation Announces Release 3.0 of the Brixton PU2.1 SNA Server; Major enhancements to functionality and ease-of-use strengthen Open Systems-to-SNA connectivity.

MINNEAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 10, 1995--Computer Network Technology Corporation (CNT (Carbon NanoTube) See nanotube. ) today announced Release 3.0 of its flagship SNA (Systems Network Architecture) IBM's mainframe network standards introduced in 1974. Originally a centralized architecture with a host computer controlling many terminals, enhancements, such as APPN and APPC (LU 6.  connectivity software, the Brixton PU2.1 SNA Server. The central component in the Brixton Open Systems-to-SNA solution, the new version of the Server represents a significant upgrade in functionality and usability. Large organizations with both legacy systems and TCP/IP TCP/IP

The Brixton PU2.1 SNA Server is being announced in conjunction with the Brixton Open Client for Windows 3.1 and is being marketed with free Brixton TCP/IP Clients for Windows 3.1. The Server's advanced client/server architecture An environment in which the application processing is divided between client workstations and servers. It implies the use of desktop computers interacting with servers in a network in contrast to processing everything in a large centralized mainframe. See client/server.  allows for efficient distribution of communications processing, with the bulk of that processing occurring on the Server rather than the legacy system. Designed for mid- to large-sized organizations with extensive IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries)  host access requirements, a single SNA Server can support thousands of user sessions A count of how many times all users access a Web site regardless whether the same person came back several times during the measurement period. If a user leaves and returns within a short time, some systems count those sessions as one. Contrast with unique visitors. See also user session.  and is architected for high availability.

Key enhancements incorporated into the Server include:

o A distributed gateway. This allows SNA Servers on different systems to act in concert to provide reliable connections to IBM mainframe and midrange hosts. The gateway's load-balancing capability means that when a system fails or is deactivated for maintenance, the Server automatically reroutes users to available systems.

o A graphical management interface. The distributed gateway can be configured and managed from one graphical console. The state of all resources is summarized in an easy to view interface; point-and-click operations allow the systems administrator to create, delete and modify SNA Server resources.

o AFTP file transfer. Any TCP/IP FTP client can access host-based files using Brixton's FTP/AFTP gateway.

o TN3270E support. New industry-standard communications protocols are supported for linking workstations, printers and IBM mainframes.

Tighter Host/Terminal and Client/Server Integration for Large-Scale Networks

o The new version of the Brixton PU2.1 SNA Server represents substantial gains in Open Systems-to-SNA connectivity," said Herb Rush, vice president of engineering at CNT. "With the functionality we've added, companies can integrate SNA and IP/IPX more tightly than ever and increase operational control. The Server maximizes the power of our customers' host systems and desktop computers while allowing network administrators to maintain management and security."

Other new features in the Server include:

o Novell NetWare for SAA (Systems Application Architecture) A set of interfaces designed to cross all IBM platforms from PC to mainframe. Introduced by IBM in 1987, SAA includes the Common User Access (CUA), the Common Programming Interface for Communications (CPI-C) and Common Communications  support, to allow NetWare clients to participate in an organization's SNA connectivity strategy;

o response time monitoring, to capture response times experienced by users for both SNA and TCP/IP network segments and quickly identify connection problems;

o auditing and accounting, to track SNA Server usage and charge internal departments or customers; and

o on-line manuals, to provide instant documentation about SNA Server operations and other specific topics, simplifying problem-solving. With the incorporation of these capabilities, the Brixton PU2.1 SNA Server is specifically designed to leverage large router networks and meet the rigorous demands of data center communications.

Pricing and Availability

The Brixton PU2.1 SNA Server is available immediately for the Sun SPARC (Scalable Performance ARChitecture) A family of RISC CPUs from Sun that runs mostly under Sun's Solaris, but also under Linux and BSD operating systems. After development began in the mid-1980s by David Patterson of the University of California at Berkeley and Bill  and IBM RS/6000 platforms. Versions for HP 9000, Digital UNIX, Solaris x86, SCO UNIX, UnixWare, Sequent, Stratus, and Windows NT will be available during Q3. Pricing begins at $2,500 for 16 sessions. Customers purchasing the Server will receive free Brixton TCP/IP Clients for the Windows 3.1 platform, equal to the number of Server sessions licensed.
