Part of the Information Systems & Telecommunications Division of Hitachi Ltd. ) today announced the first major software and hardware collaboration to offer customers an end-to-end storage management solution across the entire enterprise.

In addition, CA and Hitachi Data Systems announced far-reaching plans to maximize the efficiency of enterprise storage and information management, while minimizing the associated risks and complexities. By tightly integrating the underlying unique architectures of both CA's Unicenter TNG and Hitachi Freedom Storage, the companies are eliminating a cumbersome layer of complexity in storage management. This enables management of storage to be fully integrated into heterogeneous corporate data management strategies.

"Providing end-to-end storage management calls for the integration of best-of-breed software, hardware, and value-added services A value-added service (VAS) is a telecommunications industry term for non-core services or, in short, all services beyond standard voice calls and fax transmissions. ," said Marc Sokol, CA senior vice president of advanced technology. "We're combining the market-leading capabilities of Unicenter TNG with the innovative, quality engineering of Hitachi Freedom Storage.  the industry research firm, International Data Corporation (IDC), storage management is the largest segment of the fast-growing systems management market. IDC forecasts revenues for the storage management market to grow from $2.18 billion in 1997 to $3.55 billion by 2002. IDC studies show that enterprise-scale system management tools can increase the value of customers' heterogeneous environments by reducing downtime and improving productivity of the IS staff.

"Across the board, our large systems customers are asking for more comprehensive solutions to simplify their IT operations," said Jeff Edwards, Hitachi Data Systems vice president, storage applications. "By combining the expertise of CA as the leader in enterprise management and Hitachi Data Systems as a technology leader in storage subsystems, we are delivering solutions that give IT decision-makers the comprehensive, reliable information they need to ensure continuous service availability and maximum return on storage resource investments."

environments, the Freedom 5700E and 7700E, have been engineered for monitoring and management. Unicenter TNG exploits these capabilities by automatically identifying the systems on the network, providing immediate management, configuration, and access by system administrators. Advanced monitoring capabilities available through Unicenter TNG give customers fast access to key data management information, greatly simplifying core IT management processes. The integration also allows these HDS solutions to be correlated into Unicenter TNG's unique Business Process Views.

Additional deliverables include integration of Hitachi Data Systems' performance, management and monitoring tools, which can be launched from within Unicenter TNG. Both companies are working together to greatly simplify data management including disaster recovery. CA will also provide additional functionality in the areas of backup, recovery, replication/remote copy, data migration and directory-based storage management.

In addition to empowering customers, the open, extensible storage management platform resulting from these efforts allows third-party developers to easily integrate their solutions into corporate storage architectures. A coordinated effort is already underway to bring together both companies' other partners to address such challenges as high-speed access to storage via Fibre Channel and Storage Area Networking.

"With this collaboration, CA and Hitachi Data Systems are the first companies to deliver true enterprise-level Storage Resource Management. This is a marvelous combination," said Michael Peterson, president of Strategic Research Corporation. At last, centralized control 1. Hitachi Freedom Storage, equipped with Unicenter TNG interoperability, is scheduled to ship by the first quarter of 1999.
