The announcement was made Tuesday by Al Smith, president of Saratoga Systems.

As the first phase in a plan to standardize on SPS, Saratoga's flagship sales automation product, CA is already initiating deployment of the software at the company's Islandia, N.Y. headquarters.

"While Saratoga has many customers in the 1,000-seat and higher range, CA -- with more than 3,500 seats worldwide -- is poised to become one of our largest customers. We are extremely pleased to have been awarded this contract," said Smith.

"SPS edged out the competition by offering CA a combined price/performance advantage that other vendors could not deliver. In terms of functionality, SPS provides better ease-of-use, installation and maintenance -- and the ability to migrate account and customer data from various legacy systems to the SPS database."

Richard Chiarello, CA's senior vice president of sales, the company closely analyzed product offerings from several major sales automation software providers before selecting SPS.

"Saratoga's experience with global companies along with its worldwide network of sales and technical support offices assured us that they could quickly deploy the SPS system and support us through each phase of the project roll out on an international level," said Chiarello. "We also felt that Saratoga was best equipped to assist us with our changing needs as CA continues to grow."

Prior to SPS, each regional CA office used various automation and contact management tools. Chiarello and members of the CA information technology team realized that a comprehensive system deployed enterprise-wide and maintained in one central location would allow more effective management of complex, global accounts as well as a rapidly expanding sales team.

SPS is an easy-to-use, Windows-based sales productivity system that functions as a distributed database A database physically stored in two or more computer systems. Although geographically dispersed, a distributed database system manages and controls the entire database as a single collection of data.  solution, allowing end users of PCs or laptops to upload, download and share customer data.

The software generates reports consisting of account data uploaded each night from each regional office, enabling sales and marketing management to analyze lead generation, lead assignments, opportunity management and to track multiple opportunities available within each account.

"SPS allows each regional CA office to maintain an intermediary database which is networked via LANs to WANs to the central database running on a Windows NT (Windows New Technology) A 32-bit operating system from Microsoft for Intel x86 CPUs. NT is the core technology in Windows 2000 and Windows XP (see Windows). Available in separate client and server versions, it includes built-in networking and preemptive multitasking.  server in the Islandia headquarters. Each office maintains its own department files, yet all the data is uploaded to the central database every evening," explained Chiarello.

The open architecture of SPS allows data to be imported from other applications, ensuring unlimited use of information across the enterprise. These applications include Microsoft Exchange Messaging and groupware software for Windows from Microsoft. Exchange Server is an Internet-compliant e-mail system that runs under Windows NT/2000 and Windows Server 2003. It can be accessed by Web browsers, the Exchange client, versions of Outlook and the earlier Windows Inbox. , Microsoft Word A full-featured word processing program for Windows and the Macintosh from Microsoft. Included in the Microsoft application suite, it is a sophisticated program with rudimentary desktop publishing capabilities that has become the most widely used word processing application on the market. , WordPerfect and MS Mail. Future releases of SPS will offer CA-OpenIngres support.

Support for Microsoft Exchange, which was recently announced by Saratoga, was made possible by assistance from CA. As a result, remote users can now use their local Internet Service Provider Internet service provider (ISP)

The optimized SPS agent pulls information out of the database, making it available to Microsoft Exchange users. In addition, it allows local SPS users to access their Exchange post office via the ISP.
