Computer Associates, Digital and StorageTek Set New Standard for SAP R/3 Backup Performance On Windows NT.

ISLANDIA, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--February 24, 1998--

Higher Performance And Availability Lowers Total Cost Of

Business-Critical Applications Like SAP R/3

Computer Associates International, Inc. (CA) today announced that CA's ARCserve has tested as the fastest high performance backup solution for SAP R/3 Windows NT (Windows New Technology) A 32-bit operating system from Microsoft for Intel x86 CPUs. NT is the core technology in Windows 2000 and Windows XP (see Windows). Available in separate client and server versions, it includes built-in networking and preemptive multitasking.  Very Large Databases (VLDBs).  Advanced Storage Option, delivered an unparalleled "hot" online backup Using the Web to store copies of data for backup. There are numerous providers on the Internet that charge for storage, and fees are typically based on capacity. Online backup services provide offsite backup, which is essential for disaster recovery. See backup types.  rate of 267 gigabytes per hour. For off-line backup of SAP R/3 and backup of Windows NT file servers, the rate surpasses 515 gigabytes per hour. These test results were accomplished on a Digital Alpha Server with 16 StorageTek Redwood tape drives.

ARCserve also set the previous record of nearly 100 gigabytes per hour for "hot" online Windows NT database backups at scalability day last May 1997. Until now, it was believed that backups of over 100 gigabytes per hour were not feasible on Windows NT, and simply inadequate for SAP R/3 VLDBs. The new results show the fastest Windows NT backups ever recorded for VLDBs, delivering higher performance and availability that can lower the total cost of business-critical applications like SAP R/3.

These results are very important for the growing number of organizations who use or are considering Windows NT as their strategic server operating system See network operating system. . Many applications such as SAP R/3 work with huge amounts of financial, customer and inventory data that needs to have high availability Also called "RAS" (reliability, availability, serviceability) or "fault resilient," it refers to a multiprocessing system that can quickly recover from a failure. There may be a minute or two of downtime while one system switches over to another, but processing will continue.  while maintaining full integrity. This demonstration proves that ARCserve provides the robust backup and restore capabilities necessary to meet the demands of critical business systems on Windows NT.

The tests, conducted at Digital's benchmarking lab in Palo Alto, California “Palo Alto” redirects here. For other uses, see Palo Alto (disambiguation).
Palo Alto (IPA: /ˌpæloʊˈʔæltoʊ/, from Spanish: palo: "stick" and alto: "high", i.e.
, demonstrated how Digital's 64-bit Alpha architecture improves the efficiency of handling VLDB (Very Large DataBase) An extremely large database. What constitutes a VLDB is debatable, but databases of 100GB or more are generally considered the starting point.  databases. "This performance breakthrough was accomplished using off-the-shelf hardware and software components," said Paul Krneta, Digital's director of Database Technologies. "This demonstration 'raises the bar' once again and propels Windows NT into the VLDB marketplace. It proves that Windows NT on Alpha provides an architecture that supports the ultra-high capacity storage required by VLDB users. Digital is offering a service that delivers a 'turnkey' backup and restore solution and guarantees performance."

"The availability of a fast, high performance backup and restore capability for Very Large Databases is critical to the scalability of SAP R/3 on Windows NT," said Murray Berkowitz, CA's senior vice president of Advanced Technology. "ARCserve provides the time critical, high availability solution needed to insure data integrity as SAP R/3 implementations grow."

"The Windows NT backup results with ARCserve are evidence of StorageTek's continuing efforts to bring high performance backup to the open systems arena," said Don Kleinschnitz, vice president, StorageTek Multiplatform Business Group. "StorageTek is the leader in scaleable mass storage subsystems The part of a computer system that provides the storage. It includes the controller and disk drives. See storage system.  and we're pleased to bring this expertise to the Windows NT market in conjunction with CA's ARCserve."

VLDBs often consist of more than a terabyte One trillion bytes. Also TB, Tbyte and T-byte. See tera and space/time.

(unit) terabyte - 2^40 = 1,099,511,627,776 bytes = 1024 gigabytes or roughly 10^12 bytes.

of data that needs to be backed up on a regular basis. With an off-line backup rate of 515 gigabytes per hour, this process will take only two hours. The previous off-line rate of 240 gigabytes per hour would have required twice as much time. This represents a significant reduction in the total cost of ownership for Windows NT by reducing the backup window, personnel, and computer resources necessary for these backups.

The faster backup speeds also offer advantages to non-VLDB users. For instance, users with small to medium sized databases struggle to back them up in the time allotted al·lot

. The common backup strategy for database administrators, to save time, is to just do a nightly backup of individual tablespaces, instead of the whole database. This strategy lengthens the time it takes to restore the database in case of catastrophic failure A catastrophic failure is a sudden and total failure of some system from which recovery is impossible. The affected system not only experiences destruction beyond any reasonable possibility of repair, but also frequently causes injury, death, or significant damage to other, often . A single backup image of the database eliminates time-consuming database rollback A DBMS feature that reverses the current transaction out of the database, returning the data to its former state. A rollback is performed when processing a transaction fails at some point, and it is necessary to start over. See two-phase commit.  and roll forward processes.

Strategies for backing up databases are designed to meet available backup windows and cost-performance goals. Therefore, the demonstration used two test scenarios A set of test cases that ensure that the business process flows are tested from end to end. They may be independent tests or a series of tests that follow each other, each dependent on the output of the previous one. The terms "test scenario" and "test case" are often used synonymously. : (1) a "cold" database backup in an off-line mode where the database is inaccessible to users; and, (2) a "hot" database backup that is accessible to users and allows changes to be made to the database during the backup procedure. ARCserve provides the flexibility for both "hot" and "cold" backups, and supports a total solution with the high performance, high availability, and data integrity necessary for VLDBs.
