) today announced the start of the beta testing (programming) beta testing - Testing a pre-release (potentially unreliable) version of a piece of software by making it available to selected users. This term derives from early 1960s terminology for product cycle checkpoints, first used at IBM but later standard throughout the  period for its new Dimension(TM) time and billing system.

A Dallas area law firm, Norman A. Zable Professional Corporation, was the site of the first Beta software Noun 1. beta software - software that has not yet been released but has received an alpha test and still has more bugs than a regular release; "beta software is usually available only to particular users who will test it"  installation. Zable was formerly a partner in the firm of True & Zable (now True, Rohde & Sewell, and still a CompuTrac user) when the firm purchased CompuTrac's first resale system in 1976. "I remember how CompuTrac offered superior functionality ahead of their time. After seeing the new system, I feel they have done it again. I am looking forward to using their latest system," said Zable.

Although this is the first live installation of Beta software, CompuTrac has been meeting with Dallas area firms for several months in focus group style meetings. "We have found these meetings to be extremely beneficial," said Jay Stromberg, Dimension Product Manager. "Not only have the meetings served to verify our development, the firms have given us valuable feedback on the functionality and design of the software. Dimension has been developed exclusively with Microsoft(R) tools and products. It is designed to run on Windows 95(R) and/or Windows NT (Windows New Technology) A 32-bit operating system from Microsoft for Intel x86 CPUs. NT is the core technology in Windows 2000 and Windows XP (see Windows). Available in separate client and server versions, it includes built-in networking and preemptive multitasking. (R), and will integrate seamlessly with many other Microsoft products, including Word and Excel. Dimension is designed to support firms ranging from sole practitioners to 75 attorneys in its initial release. Dimension will offer easy to use and broad functionality. With the click of a button, an attorney will be able to bill a client over the Internet or download a sophisticated report to a Microsoft Excel (tool) Microsoft Excel - A spreadsheet program from Microsoft, part of their Microsoft Office suite of productivity tools for Microsoft Windows and Macintosh. Excel is probably the most widely used spreadsheet in the world.
