Latin Legum Baccalaureus (Bachelor of Laws) LLB Bachelor of Laws [Latin Legum Baccalaureus] Noun 1. ) today announced details of their new product line, Dimension, which is currently nearing completion of development. CompuTrac has been providing time, billing, accounting and management software to the law firm marketplace since 1977. During the last 10 years, CompuTrac products have been targeted almost exclusively towards the largest law firms This list of the world's largest law firms by revenue is taken from The Lawyer and The American Lawyer and is ordered by 2006 revenue:[1]
Dimension has been developed exclusively with Microsoft tools and products. It is designed to run on Windows 95 and/or Windows NT (Windows New Technology) A 32-bit operating system from Microsoft for Intel x86 CPUs. NT is the core technology in Windows 2000 and Windows XP (see Windows). Available in separate client and server versions, it includes built-in networking and preemptive multitasking. . During the last six months, Dimension has been demonstrated at legal trade shows using both Windows 95 and Windows NT. Dimension is fully integrated with a whole host of other Microsoft products, including Microsoft Mail An earlier and simple messaging system from Microsoft that runs on PC and AppleTalk networks. Gateways are available to a variety of mail systems including X.400, PROFS and MHS. Microsoft Mail-enabled applications are written to the MAPI programming interface. See Microsoft Exchange. , Microsoft Excel (tool) Microsoft Excel - A spreadsheet program from Microsoft, part of their Microsoft Office suite of productivity tools for Microsoft Windows and Macintosh. Excel is probably the most widely used spreadsheet in the world. Latest version: Excel 97, as of 1997-01-14. , Microsoft Exchange Messaging and groupware software for Windows from Microsoft. Exchange Server is an Internet-compliant e-mail system that runs under Windows NT/2000 and Windows Server 2003. It can be accessed by Web browsers, the Exchange client, versions of Outlook and the earlier Windows Inbox. , Microsoft Word A full-featured word processing program for Windows and the Macintosh from Microsoft. Included in the Microsoft application suite, it is a sophisticated program with rudimentary desktop publishing capabilities that has become the most widely used word processing application on the market. and Microsoft Word Pad, as well as underlying Microsoft technologies such as OLE2 and ODBC (Open DataBase Connectivity) A database programming interface from Microsoft that provides a common language for Windows applications to access databases on a network. . CompuTrac's strategy of exclusively using Microsoft technologies during development has allowed Dimension to integrate all of these products with a minimum of effort and without the usual concerns of multi-vendor compatibility. Dimension uses client server technology to its fullest extent. Over 90 percent of the processing is done by the user's individual PC (the client), while less than 10 percent is done by the server. For single user systems, the same PC acts as both the client and the server. This architecture permits the user to expand their system and processing power with a simple, straightforward, inexpensive approach. Dimension is a relational database solution based on Microsoft relational data base technology. This includes everything from Microsoft Access 95 run time software, which is provided at no charge and which will reside on the PC of every Dimension user, to Microsoft SQL Server A relational DBMS from Microsoft that is a major component of the Windows Server System. It is Microsoft's high-end client/server database and is closely integrated with Microsoft Visual Studio and the Microsoft Office System. (not available at product introduction), which will be "the behind the scenes" workhorse for large firm Windows NT server based systems. Dimension can be installed in a law firm with a single PC or in law firms with large networks. It can also be installed in a law firm using peer to peer communication, such as a small firm or remote office with just a few PCs, without the necessity of installing a server. Dimension is intended to bring to law firms capabilities and ease of use not previously possible before the advent of the array of Microsoft tools, with which Dimension has been developed. With the click of a button, an attorney will be able to bill a client over the Internet or dump a sophisticated report to an Excel spreadsheet for analysis. Without clicking anything, an attorney will receive an automatic E-Mail message from their Dimension system when a client's case is about to go over budget. With 'stop' and 'go' traffic lights, an individual attorney can start keeping time on one client and discontinue keeping time on another. Dimension is intended to provide the small firm with low cost, easy to use tools to enable the small firm to compete on a level playing field See net neutrality. with large firms. For example, client requirements, like "task based billing", have been sweeping the legal arena over the last several years, but only large firms have been able to afford the software and manpower necessary to satisfy their clients' demands. Dimension is designed with the goal of providing the same sophisticated capabilities to sole practitioners, at a price well within their budget and ease of use well within their capacity. Dimension is currently scheduled to be installed in Beta test sites this coming February. General product release is scheduled approximately 90 days thereafter.
