CompuAdd announces completion of K's rollout.AUSTIN, Texas --(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Feb. 24, 1995 -- The Point of Sale Division (POS (1) See point of sale and packet over SONET. POS - point of sale ) of CompuAdd Computer Corp. and K's Merchandise IS staff have completed installation of a new POS information system for the Decatur, Ill.-based discount chain. The 12-store rollout took just 4 months and included 264 CompuAdd CR6 terminals, 20 CompuAdd PCs, Novell LANs and a wide area network (WAN). Previously, K's used proprietary systems that were expensive to maintain and made hardware and software solutions interdependent in·ter·de·pen·dent adj. Mutually dependent: "Today, the mission of one institution can be accomplished only by recognizing that it lives in an interdependent world with conflicts and overlapping interests" . They also kept K's from implementing newer, lower-priced technology based on open systems and industry standards, and provided insufficient networking and communications capabilities. Ken Greenwell, K's Information Systems Director, said: "We needed something to help us provide exceptional customer service. We have a talented staff and needed equally capable equipment. Our plan was to make the leap to a new platform, then immediately make major enhancements. With our staff and CompuAdd, it appears we are now going to be able to do even rocket science rocket science n. 1. Rocketry. 2. The approximately 20 CompuAdd POS systems within each store are linked via a Novell LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used. . Each LAN is controlled by a back-office CompuAdd PC acting as a server. These servers, in turn, are connected to headquarters via a wide area network (WAN) that spans K's 130-thousand-square-mile trading area in Illinois, Missouri and Iowa.
