These demonstrations, held under exparte communications rules, compared the performance of conventional narrow-band channels with proposed 150Kz channels within the 24Mz of spectrum recently allocated to public safety in the 700MHz (MegaHertZ) One million cycles per second. It is used to measure the transmission speed of electronic devices, including channels, buses and the computer's internal clock. A one-megahertz clock (1 MHz) means some number of bits (16, 32, 64, etc.  band.

suite of public safety software was used to transmit color "Mug-shot" images wirelessly over both narrow-band and wide-band channels. The narrow-band demonstration employed currently available 9600 bps radio modems while the wide-band demonstration used Dataradio's new, 128Kbs high-speed technology. By using a wide-band channel, image transfer time was reduced from more than 1.5 minutes to approximately seven seconds.

Compu-DAWN and Dataradio told the commission that a flexible channel allocation is needed. This flexible allocation will allow users to determine their own bandwidth needs (for image transfer, for example) in conjunction with designated frequency coordinators instead of relying on the current restrictive and limited channel licenses.

Louis Libin, chief technology officer of Compu-DAWN, reflected the view of the mobile data software community when he said "the number of application products that law enforcement desires is rapidly growing, but implementation is severely restricted due to frequency allocations and bandwidth limitations, in particular."

Compu-DAWN is developing software applications that operate most efficiently over wide-band channels. Dataradio is developing the technology to provide wide-band products for public safety users. With more bandwidth, flexible channelization chan·nel·ize
