Compression therapy pilot project underway.

The Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC See adaptive cruise control. ) is funding a compression therapy Compression therapy may refer to:

  • Cold compression therapy, to reduce pain and swelling from a sports or activity injury
 pilot project aimed at improving the healing time for leg ulcers. Initial reports from the trial are positive. Application of sustained, graduated compression is a key element in the treatment of leg ulcers caused by damaged or incompetent incompetent adj. 1) referring to a person who is not able to manage his/her affairs due to mental deficiency (lack of I.Q., deterioration, illness or psychosis) or sometimes physical disability.  veins in the lower leg.

The compression therapy pilot is being run in Auckland, Palmerston North Palmerston North, city (1996 pop. 73,095), S North Island, New Zealand. It is a transportation and farm-marketing center with diverse industries. The city's agricultural college, founded in 1926, became Massey Univ. in 1964.  and Christchurch. Programme director in primary care with ACC's Healthwise, Alison Randall, said ACC spends around $2 million a year to treat claimants with leg ulcers. The ACC wanted these people to have a "best-practice service" to aid healing.

"We are aware there is a need for a high level of skill in the practice of compression therapy and want to define that skill set for our claimants with leg ulcers," Randall said.

The pilot project is being undertaken within a primary health care organisation in Auckland; within a general practice setting in Palmerston North; and within a community nursing service, the Nurse Maude service, in Christchurch. "This will allow us to evaluate the project's effectiveness in a variety of settings, helping to determine service specifications for a national roll-out."

Funding for claimants

ACC has agreed to pay for the following for each claimant CLAIMANT. * initial treatment, ie application of the compression bandaging;

* follow-up treatment by a nurse specialist or practice nurse; and

* peer review of treatment if heating is not achieved in 20 visits and a request for an extension of treatment is required.

Nurses were asked to present proposals to ACC, with the outcome being healing of leg ulcers within 20 visits. "From the nurses' proposals we were able to formulate a service specification that identified the service to be purchased and the agreed outcome."
